Description
The feelings of love and suffering seem to always go hand in hand. When you have strong feelings of love it feels like a cloud you’re never coming down from, and when you’re suffering it feels like a hole you’re never gonna climb out of. Why do break ups hurt so bad? Why does losing a loved one hurt so much? Why do bad things happen to good people?
I’m starting to think there is a connection between these two very powerful emotions. And then you look at the story of the Gospel and that’s when this started to click for me. The ultimate act of love at the cost of suffering.
The renaissance period of art has always inspired me, Michelangelo being my favorite artist of all time. He created some of his most recognized work all before the age of 26!!! (Statue of David, and La Pieta).
I was at a point in my drawing where I wanted to see how far I could push myself technically and pay homage to my Art heroes and try to convey the same passion and pursuit of perfection in their art.
300 painstaking hours over a 4 month period later in the middle of a worldwide pandemic I finished this piece in July of 2020. This was the most challenging piece I’ve ever created, not only technically but emotionally. I wrestled with God as I would get frustrated with not only the process of this drawing but also with the state of our world at the time.
When I finished I was creatively and emotionally exhausted, but some time has passed and I’m just now starting to see and understand what the Lord was teaching me throughout the creation of this piece.
I’ll end with this, suffering is a season that leads to acts of love. So if you’re suffering right now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light has a name. Jesus.
