The words of Leo Boyarsky himself. He stated it in an interview that they felt the vault suits shouldn't be serious and bland like the rest of the color pallet (also related to the technical reasons they're bright blue to begin with), and so he inspired himself on the spandex jumpsuits of the 70s to make something weird but stylish.
