The Starswirl Wing of the Canterlot library that had the hourglass, reminded me a lot of a TARDIS console room. I like the idea of Starswirl being a Time Pony. Celestia and/or Luna might have been his companions in their youth. If they travelled to the show's present day, then if would give at least Celestia some knowledge of the future. She could have changed some things around over time without Starswirl knowing about it, possibly after he passed on, having been in his last incarnation.
