Description More Salandit! Never enough Salandit. I love this pokemon-- It's the perfect mix of creepy and cute! Spent quite a while trying to catch a female version of this bugger. Also, I love its cry. Its like a little chuckle.

Playing around with brushes, colors, composition, technique, workflow... just about everything. I'm always trying new stuff with my art, and I think this was a successful experiment! Thoughts?
Enjoy!

Everyone says it's hard to catch a female one.  I've ran into one first time during my playthrough of sun.  Twice.

Finally heard the cry and it really does sound like a laugh.
Who would've guessed.

Like a deep laugh, and the cry is unisex, right?

I believe so. Regardless, I think it fits the Pokemon perfectly.

Me too.

They do it better in the games than in the anime where they just repeat their own names.

I like how its holding its hand over its mouth like it's giggling about something.
I like the fog effect in the distance.
Distance is a more loose word here since the cave entrance is rather nearby, but still has that fuzzy feel. Is this the new brushes you've mentioned?

Yep! Experimenting with the brush options. Paint Tool SAI is kinda limited in that regard though. Just makes me wish I had Photoshop.

I use that program too. But i'm content with the brushes.
I made a custom one. It randomises the width beyond the user's control, from 0.5 to the picked brush size.

You really did great on this one ! The rocks are really well made and the shading/light make it even better. You really surpassed yourself ! Congrats !

Whoa! This looks awesome! You've definitely outdone yourself on this one, I really like the way you mixed up foreground (Salandit himself) and background.
There isn't really anything worth pointing out for you which you could have done better on this one, so I'm just gonna focus my deepest nitpicking skills on this one.
The rock on the right in the midground is kind of weird. Whenever I look at it, I'm kind of lost trying to predict the actual form of it (in 3D).
The second thing is his right eye. I'm really torn between whether it would look better if you left it out entirely. Also, realistically speaking, if you left it in the drawing, it would theoretically bulge out a little.
Again, these are very, VERY minor things. The only real tip I have is that you could have had some red light coming from the lava on the left. That would give him even more depth and really make it seem as if he's there.

Salandit is just such a great Pokémon, although I think I like Salazzle even more so. (She was actually the highest level in my team by the time I beat the game.)

Really appreciate it! I actually thought about the eye, when drawing the centerline for the face I thought it only made sense to include it, but in that case I probably coulda added that little bulge to render it better.
Always thankful for the feedback-- fact of the matter is, it gets hard to look at your art subjectively after staring at it for a long time. Sometimes you miss the little bits because of that.

I too, love Salandit, as you can see... might try for a shiny one of these days, but then again it might not be worth it in the case that I get a shiny male... I dunno. Looks kinda cool.

Yep, I totally get what you mean, happens to everyone. Normally flipping the canvas would help in those situations, but I do that way too often while drawing so I get used to both sights.

Hey, that's something I had planned too! Getting a shiny, that is.
You need to use a male Pokémon that has the ability Cute Charm (like Sylveon). It makes it so that all Pokémon you encounter have a 2/3 chance of being of the opposite gender.

ItsWolven In reply to VarisArt [2016-12-05 09:43:09 +0000 UTC]

I actually flip the canvas all the dang time, it's like second nature at this point. I usually do it so I can make better lines. You're right though, it does help to see problems and things.

I didn't even think about that cute charm thing... I suppose that could make it a little less of a gamble. Any specific shinies in mind?

VarisArt In reply to ItsWolven [2016-12-05 10:45:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I already have a shiny Riolu/Lucario, so that's nice, but others I had in mind were a shiny Rowlet, Litten, maybe one or two Eeveelutions and of course the Salandit.
I'm actually gonna try to breed all of them (except Salandit) to be as competitive as possible since it's one of my favorite late game things to do (shiny breeding).
By the way, have you ever tried competitive battles?

ItsWolven In reply to VarisArt [2016-12-05 22:37:42 +0000 UTC]

I've never gotten into competitive pokemon because it just seems intimidating to someone who doesnt know all the little mechanics... I mean I get the gist of it, a lot of the actual battle is about prediction and stuff like that, but idk where to even start when it comes to breeding a viable pokemon or making a good team. I wanna try though and I'll probably get into it a little postgame. It just seems a little time consuming is all.
