Description I did these self-portraits because I'm interested in the labels of 'black' and 'white' when the flesh tones of any race are anything but. I painted myself literally black and literally white to explore the connotations of the two colours and how they both tonally affect a face when there is flat colour and no natural colouring to interfere with the lighting.
Those of you who know what I look like normally will probably agree that these are quite a transformation, but you could almost say that these two images are 'more truly my face', without the interference of other colours or my hair, make up, jewelery etc. I was surprised at how I looked myself, and recommend painting yourself a block colour to anyone who is either supposedly 'sure' of their self-image, or who is resorting to daytime T.V.!
