A kiss from someone large makes us small.
It purifies hot air
So that velvet-heavy jade hours
Can take on corn colours and grassy tastes,
And stop forcing us inside.

Between those tiny, soft times
We feel inexplicably big again,
Obtrusive even,
Warm storms wrapping soggy cloth to confidential thighs
While we run,
Always running in rain,
Chasing after things.

The day that smelled sweet, I missed you.
New groups assembled with drinks and cameras,
And hung daisy chains filled with naive conversation
On a tree that made colour quiet.

I tumbled down a hill, giggling and rolling,
Stripped its leafy beetle layers to clay,
And grazed my arm raw
For a scar as light and muted as a butterfly.
It bled with a luminous symmetry,
A flush too rich for summer,
Even redder than leaves that fell too soon.
