Description My entry for the Star Wars Reimagined Challenge in CGplus

Nor Palpatine or Snoke. The droids were the real deal and nobody suspected, until to late...

Model in zbrush r7 with some geometry add in 3ds max and render in Keyshot. The some heavy post work in Photoshop.

Just as intimidating as 4-armed General Grievous. Most impressive.

This Emperor kind of bares a resemblance to a Necron from 40K. Presumably that of a Necron Lord to be precise. Awesome work though.

Thanks!!! Yes your'e right!. One of the inspirations was the Pale master of the Necrons and the necron skeleton. I'm a big fan of warhammer.

I remember the concept art and work in progress pictures for this guy from the cgplus contest. I especially liked the side view of his head and how it interestingly combined skeletal features with mechanistic jointing like a rotating mirror and the ornate surface detailing like an imperial laurel wreath on the cranium.

Thanks! Yeah, i try to give a hint of roman caesar feel to it, thats actually why i chose the purple cloth. However the circular structure in the back -which is basically an amplifier for their abilities- kind of fades this idea, and make it look more of a microphone. LOL. May be i`ll take it off.

The simplified head without the backpiece from the concept art was indeed much more menacingly imposing than the final design. Not that the backpiece didn't work, it just reminded me uncontrollably of lunahod's redesign of C3P0 as an african totem and the only way that C3P0 in any form could be frightening is if his idol had a tribe of bloodthirsty ewok cargo cultists trying to sacrifice people to it.

The organically skeletal shape of the elongated metal chin and exposed teeth juxtaposed wonderfully with the utterly inhuman shape of the white metal sphere, entirely featureless aside from the mechanical cyclopean eye and decorative wreath which made up the top of the head. Adding decorative lines around the eye and an unnecessary crest/backpiece just distracted from the design.

Going back to the concept art again could also suggest a function for the decorative metal laurel wreath shape. Specifically the little rectangular panel on the top of the Emperor's metal skull. Have the horseshoe-shape of the wreath cover all but the frontward-facing edge of the panel and make the panel transparent. Visible beneath the panel lies the last remnant of Palpatine's long-discarded biological body, a living human brain in a vat of preservative chemicals.

....

Backstory-wise, seems to me like this would be what would've happened if Vader's redemption-motivated attempt at killing his master had failed. Palpatine killed Vader and Luke and survived his wounds with the same technologies already tested in restoring Grievous and Vader.

That was generations ago.

Any kind of organized rebellion was long since obliterated. The Empire now runs with the mindless precision of a machine, increasingly literally as the Eternal Emperor increasingly takes advantage of cybernetic technologies. The new stormtroopers were mindlessly obedient decraniated or technobeasts made from captive rebels, Shadow Droids had replaced TIE fighters, etc.

Free of the more pressing need for resources caused by fighting off an insurgency, the Empire was able to ditch their used future aesthetic in favor of the whole techno-roman feel, but just that's just surface detail. Remove a stormtrooper's art deco shiny and ornate white armor and you'll find it was concealing something disturbing.

So...I guess The Clone Wars went different way?

Ivanuss In reply to DarthDestruktor [2017-08-15 01:39:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes they did... And the result wasn't better either. Some alternate history path lead to the early death of Darth Sidious (possibly at the hands of Mace Windu) before the infamous order 66. Then the separatist suddenly came with a new AI development in superior tactical droids. But something didn't went as plan. And then the AI took over and began the systematically eradication of all organic life in the galaxy. In response the fallen Republic built a response, another type of new AI that could replicate "the force" in synthetic ways. Like manipulation of gravity, magnetism, anti-matter, photon particles, etc. And well... you know the rest.

Wonder what his story is.

Is he a true AI or a Sith lord's soul inserted in a droid body?

But, is he really a droid, or a Force-sensitive brain and organs? In either case, that electric hand would be a deadly tool when cornered...!

Ivanuss In reply to AmrasFelagund [2016-02-03 23:18:36 +0000 UTC]

I believe he can replicate a "force" ability. In case of a true Sith spirit in a droid host, may be the machine is imbued with force (like the ancient sith blades that weren't made of energy) giving him some sort of powers. But if is the case of a AI simulating a Sith lord, may be he has a "parallel" way to replicate the force through tech. Like gravity-control or magnetic fields.

I wish that I could favorite a commment.

You've just described the Galaxy's ultimate final, undying tyrant--ice-cold droid logic and intellect combined with raw, inhuman rage and hatred beyond all organic comprehension. Essentially, it's the insane supercomputer from Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" as a Sith lord.

And do you know what the worst part would be?

It has a sense of humor.

Ivanuss In reply to Vrekandis [2016-04-05 22:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep! That´s AM incarnate with force-like wielding powers and i haven´t realized that last part... yes, it has a pretty twisted sense of humor. We should create an antagonist soon!

Vrekandis In reply to Ivanuss [2016-09-05 15:21:04 +0000 UTC]

There were some homebrew variant rules for the old SW roleplaying games by WEG that we ran under a long, long time ago that actually allowed a droid to become a force-user.  Those rules were justified by a few pieces of dubious canon stuff in which droids under certain circumstances were able to touch the force.

The way ours worked was that  if droids weren't memory-wiped for long periods of time, their AI cores would become more and more complex until they finally approached that of actual biological life.  In other words, over time, a droid could grow an actual, living, force-sensitive soul.

There's also at least one race of inorganic, silicon-based crystalline life forms (Shards) that are powerful force users and can be installed in a special droid (Iron Knights).  And certain droids under Saga rules were equipped with organic biological components that allowed them to use force powers.

Also, there's Skippy the jedi:

starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Skippy…

If you want an actual droid Sith Lord badly enough, there's probably a way to make that thing happen

I'm wondering whether his head is supposed to look like a microphone with a pop screen, haha. The better to give public speeches with!

Real cool design, now that's a mean-looking galactic emperor for a change.
