Description BUCKY BARNES/THE WINTER SOLDIER BELONGS TO MARVEL COMICS. THANK YOU, AND ENJOY.

Bucky wandered through the mostly empty streets of New York City with no sense of real purpose other than to find a place to rest for the night--and, overall, rediscover who he was. It was winter now, and despite being dubbed The Winter Soldier he was no more immune to the cold than anyone else, and hiding out under an overpass wouldn’t cut it tonight.

So now here he was, standing in front of an abandoned parking garage with a week and a half of growth on his face, wearing ratty clothes, and still no closer to knowing who he was. The garage was scheduled for demolition in four days, and was only guarded by caution signs and tape, so Bucky decided that here was as good a place as any to sleep.

Mindful of the temperature, he moved to the back of the ground-level floor of the building. He was wary, as usual, and as soon as he saw the sleeping bag and lantern on the oily floor, he spun around.

And there was a woman. A woman with messy hair hidden by a baseball cap and worn out sneakers, halfway through eating an energy bar.

“Hi.” You waved mid-chew.

Bucky jumped on you, using a gloved hand to shove you against a cement pillar by your neck. You dropped your bar and clawed at his hand, losing air fast.

“Who sent you?” Bucky hissed. “What do you want from me?”

You choked on his hand but managed to say, “This conversation would go a lot-a lot smoother if you’d j-just let me friggin’ b-breathe.”

Bucky said nothing and continued to glare at your struggling form.

“I don’t work for anyone! I l-live here! I don’t even k-know who you are!” you assured him. You were beginning to feel light headed.

“How do I know I can trust you?” Bucky demanded.

“I’d say that the current situation is ample p-proof," you rasped.

Bucky examined you for moment before deciding that you weren’t an immediate threat and letting you drop to the ground and start coughing and gasping for air. You reached into your backpack and drank from a bottle of water. Seeing Bucky staring at it, you held it out to him. He looked at you skeptically.

“You literally saw me drinking it two seconds ago. Literally. Anyway, you’re the one who tried to strangle me. I’d say you’ve got the power here, big man.”

He took the water from you and suspiciously drank it, keeping his eyes on you the whole time. You rolled your eyes, crawling over to the wall and leaning by your sleeping bag.

When Bucky finished the water he gave it back to you, empty. You looked at him curiously. Not many people passed through here; not many figured it was a good place to camp out because it was going to be demolished soon. After giving it some thought, you decided to help the guy out. He seemed... lost. Angry, violent, apprehensive, and confused. You’d been there.

Bucky was now following your lead, leaning against the pillar he had put you against.

“Here,” you said, giving him one of your remaining energy bars. It was a weird mint raspberry flavor that you didn’t really like anyway. Again, he stared at it and you before taking it.

“Not really the trusting type, are you?” you asked as he nibbled on the edge of the bar. “Who’s after you?”

He had to think for a few moments before either deciding to tell you, or remembering--you couldn’t tell which.

“HYDRA, and what’s left of SHIELD,” he answered.

“What’s that?” you asked. You didn’t get cable in the garage, so the recent downfall of SHIELD and the unveiling of HYDRA was unknown to you.

“I think they’re spies. SHIELD was all spies. HYDRA was trying to kill a lot of people. I don’t know much about them.” He spoke as if he should know more, but was pained that he didn’t.

“Well they sound... nice.” You paused before continuing the conversation. “My name is Y/N. What’s yours?”

Once more he had to think about his answer before he said it.

“Bucky... Barnes,” he finally said, shakily and unsure.

“It’s been a pleasure, Bucky Barnes.” You chuckled to yourself thinking about how this whole thing had started with him trying to kill you.

“What’s funny?” he questioned.

“A little bit of everything, I guess,” you laughed. Bucky seemed almost envious of your ability to just laugh. He’d lost that ability a long time ago, and didn’t know when he would get it back, if he got it back at all.

When Bucky didn’t say anything and just looked to the floor, you spoke again.

“Well, goodnight, Bucky Barnes.” You threw the sleeping bag at Bucky, seeing that his jacket was much thinner than yours. You pulled up your hood and curled up in a ball on the floor. Bucky didn’t speak, he just watched you.

This was a woman who all he knew was her name, didn’t seem to have many more supplies than him, and absolutely no reason to help him. Hell, she had perfect reason not to. But there you were, curled up on the floor on a cold winter night, smiling as you heard Bucky unroll the sleeping bag and climb into it.

Bucky slept sitting up with the sleeping bag unzipped, gun in hand, so he would be able to run or move quickly if he had to. But no one came, and he soon fell asleep.

He woke up in the middle of the night and looked around. For a second Bucky couldn’t find you and he was worried you had run off in the night to tell someone about where he was, but he found your huddled form shivering on the floor. As he looked at you, he felt the need to reciprocate the compassion you had showed him.

Bucky crawled out of the sleeping bag and walked over to you. You didn’t notice as he spread out the sleeping bag over you and wiggle under it next to you, wrapping his metal arm around you to keep you warm. Bucky stayed alert in case you woke up and wanted him to leave, but you didn’t, and once you stopped trembling with cold, Bucky fell asleep.
