Excellent take on RodentiaΒ Moriartius here, Professor not-a-rat Ratigan was a superb villain and although this is just a sketch I think you have captured him very well.

The Great Mouse Detective is probably my favourite Disney cartoon of all time, it was very well written and Bazil makes a brilliant Holmes-equivalent. Also, one of the few Disney films that uses accents appropriate to its setting.

Thanks a lot! I also think that Ratigan is a very memorable character.

Very welcome, and indeed, the voice of Vincent Price probably helped too.

I heard once that Vincent Price enjoyed working on that character too.
BTW I need to re-watch that film. I saw it last years ago, and it didn't impress me back then. Probably because I imagined a Sherlock Holmes character very differently.

My favourite Disney film is probably Dumbo. (or one of the most favourite ones) It usually comes to mind first when I think of my favourite Disney cartoons.

What's your favourite non-Disney film?

Really? Was yours more the image of the quiet, deducting Holmes and less of the action type Holmes? I thought it gave a good mix of both. Bazil is of course not Holmes himself though, he just lives under his floorboards.

I used to watch Dumbo a lot when I very little, heh, I can definitely see some influence of that one in your artwork. I sort of grew out of Dumbo when the Disney "renaissance" films came out, but I still remember it fondly.

Any non-Disney film at all, or do you mean specifically childrens' films or animated films? I have a tough time deciding favourite films, to be honest, there's so many out there... let me think...
Animated/Action: Kung Fu Panda
Cartoon (drawn animation): either Fern Gulley or The Road To El Dorado
Comicbook adaptation: Flash Gordon
Comedy/Musical: Hairspray (2007 remake)
Rom-Com: My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Fantasy: Hogfather
Spoof: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Sci-Fi: can't decide between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country or Star Trek: First Contact.

How about you?

I have two variants of the image of Holmes: one is based on the Russian 1980's film series and the other one on the original books by Conan Doyle. The first is an image of a reliable and helpful friend who's also capable of being funny and sympathetic, and the second is more like pure mind and emotionless logic. But I admit I read the books long ago, so it could be just that old impression of mine that contrasted with the impression from the film.

Bazil is a very nice character on his own, of course. He's just different from how I'd picture a Holmes-type of character.

Yeah, Dumbo influenced me indeed.

I see. It's quite difficult to decide on favourite films, but I think the episode "The Hound of the Baskervilles" from the aforementioned series is one of my favourite films. We quote a lot from it in my family.
Otherwise I do love a lot of films (and a lot of them are retro). Β

So your image is holmes... is kind of like Mr. Spock? A loyal friend but also logical and stoic.

Indeed, the influence seems clear

OH wait, did you mean my favourite Sherlock Holmes version? Sorry, I misunderstood.
Hmm, well probably the old ones with Jeremy Brett.

Ah, the retro classics, any particular ones?

Never watched Star Trek so I can't compare. But from the excerpts I saw on Youtube Mr Spock is probably closer to the book version of Holmes.

I meant films in general. You got it right.

Yeah you're probably right, though I didn't get the impression of total emotionless in Holmes from what books I've read... more just... reserved.

Ah well I'd be curious to see some kind of top ten list of films from you at some point, or perhaps ones that have influenced your art/characters.

I probably couldn't make a top ten list of my favourite films. Besides something that influenced me is not always among my favourites, and vice versa - some things that I love and admire may not be a part of my influences.

Well, I name some random favourites: The Fifth Element, The Mask, Home Alone, almost all old Russian comedies by Leonid Gaidai, almost all original Tom and Jerry episodes, old Disney TV cartoons, Solaris, Fantastic Planet, Time Masters, Disney feature films, and a lot more.

I also have this strange thing about myself. If I don't like the story, but enjoy the visuals, I'll still watch a film (sometimes turning the sound off )

Ah, well that's a fair point, and I guess I could say the same thing about influences vs. favourites.

Hey, TV shows are cheating

Well that's not _so_ strange, although watching with the sound off maybe is, but children often watch stuff that's got no plot if the animation/visual aspect is still captivating, so maybeΒ it's just something that, because you draw cartoons, you never grew out of.

But TV shows influenced me. I can't help it.

I heard an interview with a film music composer who said that he could "watch" a film with his eyes closed, because music and the world of sound is much more important to him than visuals. I guess I'm a little like him.

Ah yes, one of my all-time favorite Disney villains. Β I'm thankful that The Great Mouse Detective is a film that Disney has left alone - even if it doesn't get much acknowledgement anymore, it's fine the way it is. Β And nobody else can match the great Vincent Price's performance.

You really captured his build and delicious deviousness perfectly, too. Β Fantastic work!

Thanks! I'm quite indifferent to the movie itself, but I strangely enjoyed drawing Ratigan. There's something attractive about his deviousness.
