Description A little over 6 years ago, I did my first watercolor painting. I was bored in a hotel room with nothing on the television and only a rosebud for company; so I painted the rosebud, but made it blue.

Blue roses have ever been a fascination of mine. Used to be they were impossible fantasies. Thanks to Australian and Japanese bioengineering, they now exist. Well, they've made one, and think they can breed it out to make vast amounts and shades and hues of real blue roses.

So, here I am, shirking what I should be doing, and instead, locking myself in my basement with loud music and paint; and a new blue rose is born, all these years - in some ways, a whole life - later.

Mei Gui is Mandarin for rose, by the way. Pardon my sloppy Chinese lettering. And yes, that's tengwar, not Mandarin, on the chop.

The colors are great, and it looks so elegant! It almost looks like it's made out of glass or ice, which is a very nice effect...

There's only one in existence right now, and it's in a genetic lab in either Australia or Japan (I forget), but they will be breeding it to make more.

Such a great job on this one! The onion of the bloom is very well done, love the shading, too!

I like it! There is actually a rose that's blue/white that hasn't been changed by bioengineers, at least I think. I believe it's called the Bluejay or something like that. Anyway nice work.

Since the late 1800's, there's been a standing reward for a true blue rose. They were previously possible to create due to the specifics of the rose genome. People could get lavender and silver, but never true blue. There's lots of roses with "blue" in the name, but none of them are actually blue. This is because roses naturally lack the gene to create blue pigment, but they have a predominant genetic predisposition for reds. To create a true blue rose, the bioengineers had to remove the red gene, take the blue gene delphinius (that's not quite the right word, but it's close) and then bond it to the rose genetic code with a spare bit from the iris genetic code, which is very similar to the rose code.

*breathe*

and thus, the first blue rose.
