Depends on the lens, if you are buying the Nikon Professional lenses then quality ( both Build and optical ) will be better but any of their standard range of lenses will be equalled if not surpassed by Sigma or indeed most lens manufacturers. Also depends a lot on what size your finished print will be, if you never print bigger than A4 you will be hard pushed to tell the difference

Well in this picture I was testing a Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR Micro (which was at first sight)...but maybe the Sigma 105mm F 2.8 EX DG Macro 1:1 would do just as well (but has no VR)?

Macro should ideally be shot with a tripod so VR would be switched off ( or should be at least
) so that would not bother meif the savings are significant then go for the sigma, they make good lenses especially the macros

I would probably prefer to stick to the same brand.

having said that I've had some good luck with other brands here and there at much less the money.

yes I would also prefer Nikon of course, but if the quality would be just as good I would go for the Sigma. Cause in photography it's never about buying just that one lens...no we always have a whole wishlist....so saving here and there would be nice

it's an expensive addiction to be sure.

but kind of like golf clubs... it's not so much what you have but how you use it.

yes!

mmyes....thats true, but I can imagine really good quality in material shows in your pictures too...
so the Hasselblad H4D-40 + HC F/2.8 80mm stays on the wishlist [link]
