Am I alone in believing that his worried, menacing glare is beyond adorable? Anyway, being under a dictator's thumb sure does produce great music. This is a lovely stamp and I will use it whenever time allows!
p.s- playing his 5th and 10th symphonies were two of the greatest experiences of my life!
Please excuse my rambling. I could've said a lot more.

I played them on oboe in my youth orchestra. And I think it is probably every conductor's dream to lead Mahler symphony (or Shostakovich, Mahler's Russian counterpart). I think the reason playing them is so great is that I am an overly passionate person and both Mahler's and Shostakovich's works have such rich emotion and history behind them (I am also a musicology dweeb) that it gives me the chance to transfer my deepest emotions as a human and as a musician into the pain of the soviet people.

I played his 5th symphony earlier this year. It was mind-blowing!

Yeah I played it in a youth orchestra. It was really difficult, and learning some of the parts was really frustrating but afterwards I felt so accomplished!
are you a conductor?

Yes I am a conductor and I conduct a youth orchestra here in France, near Paris.
What instrument do you play?

Great! I wish you a good work and a good performance. Will you perform it in public?

Thank you! We've performed it once in recital, and in competition. We're going to the provincial round (we live in Canada) of competitions on June 6, actually, to compete. Going to be playing the first and second movement of the Shostakovitch 8th string quartet, and the first movement of Mendelssohn's second string quartet.

I hope so too, but it's quite unlikely. He's about the only cellist around our age in the area who plays at our level, most of the others are at a notably lower level. So it's most likely that quartet will break up, and the violins (our violist plays violin too) will form duets or a trio. And I'll probably play another couple violin sonatas with our violist, like I did this year, as I play piano too.
Not quite the same as quartet, but at least it'll be something.
