Also, how hard is it to get into Pripyat? Do you need a lot of paperwork, or just a permit from the government?

Not much, the tour agencies take care of it by themselves. Just make sure you don't take the one day tour, you won't see anything there.

Are you allowed to go in independently, without a group/alone? Or do you always require supervision? I can understand the need for supervision.

On the first day we were there with a large group and couldn't go far from the guide. On the second day there was only two of us and we got a better guide and a driver + car. We told them where we wanted to go and they just drove us there, smoked at the door and told us to let them know when we were done and wanted to leave
