My entry for the Splice contest.Meet Beacon.
He's a combination of octopus and chimpanzee.
This creature was created to be a revolution in service and rescue animals. Highly intelligent, strong, dexterous and capable of squeezing through very tight spaces with ease. Excellent for locating the trapped/injured in rescue missions that prove very difficult for rescue dogs, humans and remote cameras to reach, such as collapsed buildings and mine shafts. He is capable of inflicting far worse injuries than an octopus or chimp could inflict as separate entities, but he is generally of a helpful, insatiably curious temperament, making him an ideal helper animal well worth the risk of enlisting the help of, when properly trained.
As you can see Beacon can be quite a character. He loves oatmeal cookies for instance, and when missing from his containment (he is an amazing escape-artist), he's usually found in the lab lounge, munching away on them. Then when he's returned to his enclosure, minus his cookies, he can throw a sizable fit.

I LOVE his design! Firstly because there is a logical reason for the scientists to create such a creature (I loved your description of their work as rescue animals) and because you gave him such a unique character! The pictures are really amazing; it's incredible how well you blended the two extremely different animals! I'd never have thought it could be done so elegantly; both creatures are obvious at the first glance, and still Beacon looks believable and I can sort of see how he'd move.
I also really love the personality you've given him. That drawing of him curled into a ball makes me go d'awww everytime I see it.

I'm not really sure if you were going for cute, but this guy looks completely adorable.
I really want him to be an extra in Discworld now, somehow. The angry expression looks really brilliant, definitely wouldn't want to get in this guy's bad books. And the reason behind the splice is really well thought-out.

Much appreciated.
I wanted my splice to start out as useful experiment with a focus, not just an experiment to "see what happens". And of course, any animal can be dangerous if mishandled or mistreated, even the cutest ones.

Great concept, i love how you see things, very interesting and I totally agree, anybody can become dangerous when mistreated, but mostly the way the character may have changed over time gave it a very realistic feel, great job and keep it up ok?
