You named the shot well. Personally I would have perfered the fencing to be out of focus but I realize they're not going to stay like that long enough to adjust the aperture. If perhaps the red and white one's body was cropped a bit I could more easily focus on what is going in the picture. As it is the blackish fox blends in with the background a bit so the first thing my eye is drawn to is the the redder fox(especially since he takes more space than his counterpart). If the faces can be more focused on the black one's face should be brought out more. While they both have open mouths his eyes are wide open. It adds intensity.
I think its wonderful shot and it beautifully displays the scuffle over dominance.
