This is lovely! Love your rendering. I'd like to see you combine your painterly style with the harder lines of the bonus round without one overshadowing the other. You don't need to use black, just sharper edges and value differences.
Having the transformation spread from the cube is clever. Some panel borders might have made it more obvious and effective.
The malfunction is unclear but, otherwise, you've done a good job of telling the story without any words.
Overall, great job! Thanks for sharing and keep it up!

I really like your style, though I feel it can be a bit refined more. Not that it's bad, but you're someone who in a year or two will just be making tons of drop dead gorgeous art while as it is, some of the color mixing and blending can look a bit rough and undefined at points and some of the finer detail work looks a bit blotchy and fingerpainty which will only improve as you continue to refine it. And the cube is a bit round in the change panel looking just a bit off from what it ought to be. I really like your paneling and posing too, the way each change blends into the next like your style. I just wish the malfunction was more defined, like a memory disc containing one of a female model's reboots or something to show it was a malfunction and not just a tg device. Still this was a lovely entry and thanks for entering! Keep up the great work.

ah thank you so much for the in depth feedback and kind words!! ^^Β
I see, it could be more polished, I see it myself too. I need to put more thought into the blending.
I'll be sure to put them into use later on and hone my skills more!

Your painted style is pretty different from the majority of entries we get, in a good way. It adds a lot of style to your backgrounds most pieces just dont have. The anatomy is also really good for the most part and I think the hair especially looks great in your style. The sequence itself is also pretty unique with its clockwise paneling. I do think it could have used one extra layer of polish, especially on the black box which looks a bit janky in the sequence part of the comic.
The only big issue I have here is the malfunction itself being as vague as it gets. From my understanding black boxes are just power cores? So the malfunction seems maybe a bit overlooked as things go. As for the bonus art I enjoyed it but I didnt factor it into your score one way or another since it was just extra.
Great stuff though, just needed a bit more thematically

Normally I prefer pictures that have one single image, but I really liked the way you used windows overlayed over a picture with small fractional pieces, like in the middle image. That you were able to tell a story without dialogue and in such a short amount of space is impressive.

Nice comic style render. Although you should remember that there are mostly hard shadows around the neck and the arms and basically all around the body. Using a gradient of everything makes it look bland. Great work thoughΒ

Ah man, what a great time to start playing Nier than see this? This is wonderful!
The lighting, The colors, the use of so few hard colored borders? Its so great and the Bonus Round sketches help sell the idea even more.
I wish you luck on this contest Jackie, but I honestly don't think you need it. Your piece is so nice that I can't foresee you getting anything less than first place in the art section of the contest.

nier is so awesome, it's such a cliche to say that a game changed someones life, but it definitely did change mine! met some awesome people through it, and got another existential crisis, yay!
I'm kinda eager to make a 3D-model of fem-9s, but I doubt I have the time (plus my character model skills don't do justice to nier... ;-, oh well, maybe someday!Β
and thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm really flattered, you are way too kind to me! ^^
overall, I'm just interested in seeing how people are going to implement the theme, it can have loads of different creative routes! the main thing is to have fun right?

This is really great! You established your circumstances and the cause without words, which is really impressive, and your paintery style for the sequence I think gives it a lot of great visual appeal. I also really appreciate that you didn't take the easy route and make 9S into a 2B clone, you managed to give the feminine version it's own unique flair which differentiates the two very effectively. That smug look in the bottom right also kills me every time.

I'm a firm believer that it's always a good idea to post smug android gals. There is literally no downside.Β
