Description The tragedy going on in Japan right now is unimaginable. Earthquakes, tsunami waves, fires, nuclear leaks...it seems like they've been hit with just about everything. I've been reading the news quite a bit since I woke up to the headlines yesterday morning and my heart goes out to all of those people.

This illustration is my response to the whole situation, offering some hope in my own little way. I used sumi ink, watercolor paper, and Photoshop to put it together this morning. Completed March 12, 2011.

i know it sounds strange to say this, but this is a beautiful representation of the disaster. Wonderful contrast of the darkness and fear against the fragility of the paper crane. But the white crane is a beautiful symbol hope against the darkness

Thank you, that's what I was going for! I know that since I made this there's been a lot of art on DA having to do with the whole situation. This was just my immediate visual reaction to those initial images and videos of those waves of black water moving into the towns. I was thinking, style wise, more in the way of editorial illustrations than anything else when I put it together.

I love this so much and a part of me got washed away when the tsunami hit. Being so young I never knew I could feel such empathy for people half a world away. Godbless them I hope they feel the love and sympathy emanating from the millions around the world watching as this unfolds and were doing all we can to pull you guys out of the rubble you'll rise again.

I'm glad the piece spoke to you. I don't have the means to do anything more than this and donate to the Red Cross, but at least it's something in this bleak situation.

It's hard to even imagine what they're going through right now. God help them.

Thank you. How did things fare for you in Hawaii? Everyone ok?

Pretty good, thanks! Some damage in a few areas, a relatively small number homes were lost, one even got sucked out into a bay. But no injuries as far as I've heard. People had ample time to evacuate. So, very, very fortunate. On a personal note, my home is inland from the evac-zone, so other than sitting up late worrying, we were fine.

I just really wish things had been as kind to poor Japan.

I'm glad you appreciate the picture. I can't imagine having to deal with the level of tragedy that Japan is facing.
