"I won't be a rock star, darling. I will be a legend."
~ Freddie Mercury
--
I, like many, grew up with Queen. They may have been before my time, but there's no question that the music they made is truly timeless - and a lot of it is thanks to this man; Freddie Mercury.
I've fallen down the Queen rabbit hole pretty hard and fast thanks to the new film "Bohemian Rhapsody", but it was always an obsession waiting to happen, never too far away. I would always sing along to Queen on the radio, and I'll never forget the first time that I heard Bohemian Rhapsody.
Freddie is truly an icon, an inspiration, and a musical genius. Flamboyant and outrageous; I love everything about him. I really wanted to capture him as best as I could, and I hope that the result has done him justice and captured just an essence of the man he was.
The photo that I referenced really needs no introduction, but when I think of Queen I think of this photo. Taken by Mick Rock, it's originally the Queen II album cover (with John Deacon, Brian May, and Roger Taylor behind Freddie), it became iconic in their music video for Bohemian Rhapsody - and the rest is history.
This piece took me a lot longer than you would think given its simplicity, but it was actually BECAUSE of its simplicity that it nearly doubled my work time to try and capture every single detail that I could. The result is probably one of my favourite pieces of artwork to date.
(As always, this photo doesn't to the original justice at all, but I tried my best to match everything as accurately to the original as possible.)
This is done on 16"x20" Black Suede Illustration Board, using an Iwata CM-C+ Airbrush, Createx Paint, and black and white charcoal.
This took me around 10+ hours.
