Description
"But if you're the one protecting me...then who's protecting you?!"
Lets continue our Disney/Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary celebration with the feature-length adventure of an older Steven and his friends as they must figure out a way to prevent a complete annihilation of Earth, Steven Universe: The Movie.
Two years after the events of the series, Steven Quartz Universe has been traveling across the galaxy to Gem-colonized worlds to keep the peace.
Upon returning to Earth after his mission, Steven reunites with Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, Connie, and Greg. They check on the progress of Little Homeworld, a small colony for the healed gems that used to be corrupted, headed by Bismuth, Peridot, and Lapis Lazuli.
But a short while later, a vengeful Gem named Spinel arrives with a massive injector filled with enough poison to destroy all organic life on the planet, and defeats Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst, and attempts to kill Steven until he uses her weapon against her.
Steven then takes their gemstones back to his house where they reform, but have lost their memories.
Bismuth recognizes Spinel's weapon as a Gem Rejuvinator, a weapon capable of resetting a Gem's mindset to when they first emerged. The Rejuvinator has also greatly affected Steven's powers during their brawl.
Steven later learns that Spinel only came because of a past sin that Pink Diamond committed against her.
Now it's up to Steven and the rest of his friends to find a way to get Amethyst, Pearl, and Garnet their memories back, regain control of his powers, and figure out how to stop Spinel's injector from destroying the world.
The story is very well written and solidly paced as it's a solid continuation of the series, still manages to be pretty action-packed, heartfelt, and funny, and it manages to keep its peaceful and spirited tone of the show while also greatly raising the stakes. It also has a good moral that when someone claims that they care about you, but they treat you very poorly, you're better off without them, and you should find someone new who will treat you better. It also features a well done recap for newcomers. However, as solid as it is, the "amnesia" plotline is easily predictable, and there are some things from the series that are left unexplained in the movie, and continue to go unexplained in "Future". Also, it's never explained how Spinel managed to get the Rejuvinator or the injector.
The action scenes have definitely been amped up from the movie as they're now more intense and even shows a little blood such as the first fight with Spinel, Spinel accidentally wrecking some of Little Homeworld and the Gems trying to get out of the way, the Gems saving everyone in Beach City from the poison, and the final battle between Steven and Spinel.
Like the show, the movie also has some strong heart which does lead to some pretty tender and emotional moments. Especially Spinel's backstory.
The movie also still manages to have some solid humor like the show did, and while they don't all get a laugh, a good chunk of the jokes do such as the witty banter and dialogue between the characters, some of Spinel's goofy shenanigans, and the gags.
The animation is still just as solid as it was in the show, and has even gotten a bit of an upgrade. The characters all still have their solid, recognizable designs and very fluid movements, the backgrounds are still very well done and have a bit more scope and detail, and there are still some very solid effects.
The characters are all still just as likable and well developed as they were in the show, and they still have some great chemistry.
Steven is still a very solid and likable protagonist as he's now fully matured and accomplished his mission of establishing peace across the galaxy, but he still has much to learn such as knowing that things can't always be perfect. And he's now more than willing to put his foot down and get into the fight while still looking for more peaceful solutions.
The Crystal Gems are still very likable and supportive characters, and they still have their likable personalities and traits like Pearl being more quaint, Garnet being more stern, and Amethyst being more brash. And while the amnesia stuff with them is predictable as we know what the outcome will be, it is neat to see what they were like in their early years and giving them a bit more backstory.
The rest of the characters are all also still pretty likable and whether their roles are major or minor, they do play a key part in the story like the supportive and brave Connie, the caring and daring Greg, the gentle giant Bismuth, the snarky and tech-savvy Peridot, the now-courageous Lapis, and even some small but solid cameos from the Diamonds.
Spinel is a very likable and solid villain as while she is very energetic, funny, and lively, and is very friendly in her original state, she can be very dangerous and threatening as she's very unhinged and her motives are purely out of anger and betrayal. But at the same time, given her backstory, she's also very relatable and sympathetic.
The voice acting is just as well done as it was in the show, and the voice actors deliver some solid performances like Zach Callison as Steven, Estelle as Garnet, Deedee Magno Hall as Pearl, Michaela Dietz as Amethyst, Sarah Stiles as Spinel, Grace Rolek as Connie, Tom Scharpling as Greg, Charlene Yi as Ruby, Erica Luttrell as Sapphire, Uzo Aduba as Bismuth, Shelby Rabara as Peridot, Jennifer Paz as Lapis, and more.
The music and songs are all still very well done just like in the show as the score is still very soothing and does fit within the tone of both the movie, and the series. And the songs are still very well written and amazingly performed like "The Tale of Steven", "Let Us Adore You", "Happily Ever After", "Other Friends", "system/BOOT. PearlFinal (3).Info", "Who We Are", "Isn't It Love?", "No Matter What", "Disobedient", "Independent Together", "Found", "True Kinda Love", "Change", and "Finale".
Overall, this is a very strong and solid companion piece to the series, and it's definitely worth checking out for any SU fan, and one of the best Cartoon Network films.
