The background is one solid color- I'm not sure why I couldn't get that in the photograph.Colored pencil on green-grey matte board.

beautifully done...I still struggle to know when to stop so I don't over-work things.
The odd lighting is just that, your lighting. I've had photos looking like they were airbrushed dark to light (or vice verso) & it's just a question of where the lamps were aimed...

I almost always feel that a full background is a necessity for a good drawing, however the person that asked me to draw this one wanted me to do something similar to my prothonotary warbler drawing. I even mentioned in my description of that one that I thought it looked really unfinished, but apparently other people must see something that I don't in it!

well, the drawing to me reminds me Field Guide drawings/paintings & I think the appeal is that they are clean & very simple...they also harken back to Japanese drawings of birds- often just the bird a& branch for it to sit on...nothing detracts from the subject matter
