Description Every piece of art I make has to come from somewhere, has to include some kind of inspiration. I never understood how someone could sit down and create a landscape or something else devoid of some kind of universal emotion. Without these feelings I wouldn't know where to begin with my artwork... so I'm not sure where a landscape would come from, except perhaps if it was of a place that had some kind of particular meaning.

Watching someone slowly retrograde in their old age is hard. And obviously culture has played a part in telling us how bad it is to age, and how we should all try our best to stop the inevitable. This for me displays both sides of the argument. Yes, it is sad to grow old, to start forgetting and atrophying, and sure, you should try to eat healthy and do healthy things to extend your life... but I feel there's also a beauty that comes with age. A beauty that can only be obtained by extended periods of life. In that one person is a long history full of love, loss, and life itself... and isn't that in and of itself beautiful? Isn't that blatant presentation of wisdom and experience something to be treasured?

So for this reason I ask you all to please take a good hard look at what you see. Maybe at first you will cringe and wriggle in your seat, and think 'how grotesque!'... but upon second look, you might see something you envy. Something gorgeous and peaceful in her face and posture, and even a sense of serenity in her empty thoughts.

The materials I used in this were copic liners, watercolor, and watered down and thick acrylic paint. I was also inspired by Alex Pardee's style, please enjoy and download if you want to see this picture in detail.

I can't look away. I mean, I feel this bit that scares the living day lights out of me but I completely see the beauty and delicate grace in the picture too. Way to make my brain hurt

It's one of those hair comb things that you push into the hair and it has a decorative piece at the top. It's sort of an old fashioned thing, I can't remember the name of them but I know my grandmother has a ton of them

Thank you, glad I could be an inspiration. ^^ It really is a lot about simple practice. I keep a journal of just observational drawings and when I get bored in class I sketch a lot. It's helped me in both technical skill, speed, and proportion so I highly recommend it.

Love the style you used here.
It's very original, and goes really well with the concept.
It's a very nice painting, that really expresses your feeling about gowing old.

GOD you're so amazing as an artist! I don't know how you could ever be turned down from booker t. (just shows how up their own asses they all are.)

I wish I had the ability to make my philosophy come out on paper in the same way you do. You always do it fantastically~

It's because I live 30 minutes away and don't have friends on the inside that can get me in. There's a kid that lives 5 minutes from me and because his father knows the music director he got in. Just proves its all networking in the world and it doesn't always matter how good you are.

In any case (hates thinking about Booker T.), thank you. I've been thinking about this for a while because my grandmother has been making a few slip ups in memory and her sister already has Alzheimer's. :/

Everytime I see Booker T I get angry too ¬¬ Pretentious bitches.

My grandma recently passed away and now my grandpa is all alone in north carolina, and we think about him a lot too. It's amazing how well he's been and how sick my grandma was... Hm. PONDERING TO BE DONE.

Bah, I know right? The freaking art director is a spineless bitch as far as I'm concerned. laksjf

Yeah my grandmother lives in a nursing home right now, and I know she's lonely. We take her out like all the time but still. If we had extra space in our house we might take her in but she probably wouldn't be happy there either because she's a total socialite and we're pretty boring at my house. Idk, pretty thought provoking stuff.

Yeah, that's how it is with my grandpa. He's really connected with his community and I don't think we could get him to leave North Carolina, even if it would mean getting to be with the only family he has.

Oh, I remember you working on this! It turned out really nicely. <3

You certainly make a good point there. I know I dread becoming old, not necessarily because of the physical effects, moreso that I'm deathly afraid of losing my mind... Of forgetting who the people I love are. It's one of my worst fears. (And damn, Alzheimer's runs on both sides of my family... I'm SCREWED.) Not to mention all the other health problems... -shudder-
But of course there's also a beauty in age, because the old have been here long enough to see so many truths that the young are oblivious to. All in all, wisdom really is beauty.

I love how your art really makes people think about things. I can't exactly say the same for mine most of the time. xD

JadedInNowhere In reply to IceandSnow [2008-06-07 02:44:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, scary but inevitable I guess. I think the fact that you have so much experience makes up for the wrinkles and view of your outsides. In a way, everybody is so superficial, being so concerned about not looking old when it doesn't matter because the real merit lies with knowledge.

Like I said, my pieces don't really happen without me thinking about something. ha

Well... yes, I think those are the people that haven't learned very much from life. If they have gained any wisdom at all, they certainly haven't learned the more important things... that it shouldn't truly matter what you look like on the outside. All the real, lasting treasure is on the inside.
