It's been six months since I made watercolor painting this big. What a great feeling to finally came back to really paint.
As usual, thank you for viewing. Your thoughts, opinion and input will be really appreciated

Note : my camera took away a lot of shading, and i have to put together 8 parts of shots for this one.. so forgive me for the miss of proportion and details. (i have problem with the joining the shoulder that will be fixed later) Time to buy a new scanner, since my old one incompatible with windows 7...

I'll try not to overlap too much with the other critiques, but i don't think that will be much of a problem as there is so much more to say about this.

To start of, as i usually talk about, i want to talk about your use of what draws attention to where. There are two things that mainly draw attention in this picture, her dress, and the thorn arm bracelet. Her skin is actually quite boring and not with much detail. I think this is good. It is what draws the attention to the dress. Also, her dress isn't any normal dress, i'll come back to this later, but you can see that this dress isn't something you take of, it's part of her, sticks to your body, doesn't let go.

The second thing i like to focus on is the technique and body part proportions as well as facial composition and positioning. You have done this very well, slight difference in eyebrows and makeup over the eyes. Not saying that it is bad (had it been too symmetrical it would have been bad), but things like that can drastically change someones expression. As for the eyebrows i think that the left eyebrow has a bit to strong curve. As apposed to the right, which has a bit more of a natural curvature. (... i am incredibly picky now, but this isn't supposed to be a praise, as so many of the other critiques i see here are.) She does have a large forehead, not unrealistically so, but a bit on the edge to being not normal i think.
As for the hair, yes yes, nice and all that, but i am impressed by how well you managed to integrate the rose pedals in her hair.

I think i'll just move on to the interpretation because i like that part best e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>.

This girl looks as someone who is just about happy all the time. All the time except for just now. My theory, or interpretation of this picture is that she, a happy girl has just lost someone very near to her and she can't seem to cope with it very well. Her expression isn't very shocked which leads me to believe that it is some time since she lost that person. I'll come back to this soon but i want to go through all the three things that says something, well, maybe four, but we'll see.

Her dress.
I think that her dress symbolizes her feelings, and it is very clear that something dark is corrupting her, starting deep down. Here comes the part with her skin. You can barely see her at all, only her clothes and her large hair. This is what lead me to believe that SHE is not seen. Her expression says that too, but i'll get there later.

Her arm bracelet.
At first i thought about Jesus' crown, but i don't think that you are referencing to that. Rather, you are referencing to the black armband used to show respect to the deceased. Instead of using fabric, you used thorns. This is also why i think that she has lost someone. Going back to the clothes, she isn't wearing black, or anything to show anything about a funeral, which is why i think that this is either after the funeral (quite some time after), or the clothes symbolize her feelings. Possibly both, but definitely the last one, but yes, maybe both.

Her hair and face.
I see this person as a tree. Her hair is the leaves. And just as a tree, you don't really see the damage, all the insects eating her inside out, until the leaves start to fall. As the faint skin symbolizes, she isn't seen, no one knows of her problems. She is keeping it all inside and it is killing her, slowly beading her life out from the hole that the person she lost made as an involuntary last deed. Her hair is big and it is all anyone from the "outside" will see, pretty flowers by a pretty face, that's it. Her expression is something you'd see from who has given up on emotion and life in general. Right now, she doesn't show much, but that will all change. As soon as the darkness, the insects, her thoughts caches up with what has happened, eats her out, puts her lights out, all she will be is a shell with pretty face ready crumble from the slightest breeze. There will be something to trigger a unbalance, and she will fall to the ground. Her face doesn't show much emotion, but her whole body cries, yet all they see is her pretty hair.

I'll try to give a short conclusion now.

So, a girl who seems happy, bright colors and pretty face, is not happy. She suffers from depression, and she isn't getting the help she needs. She is slowly tearing her self apart of shear depression and doesn't know what else to do. I think so because the arm bracelet made of thorns are symbolizing funeral tradition, her clothing is tightly stuck to her, and symbolizes her personality rather than being her actual clothes (It is not likely that she would wear clothes like that in her state anyway, it shows what she used to be like). The rose pedals also hints towards that what she is wearing isn't really what she is wearing, but tells us about her mental situation. Her expression shows that she can't cope with what has happened, this too makes me think of severe loss and insane depression, when you not only give up on life, you give up on showing emotions at all.

As a side note, the colors on her dress are very similar to the colors used in this piece. jadesweetbox.deviantart.com/ar… I don't think this is a coincidence. That picture is about someone leaving, obviously dying as the wings symbolize. I believe that this is a continuation on "Remember Me", showing what followed after the death to whoever that person was.

Well, i'm pretty much done now. I am waiting excitedly for your response now, i feel like i have just done a big test and i was able to answer well on all the questions. Did i miss something? Is there a connection between the two paintings? All in all, a very nice painting.

Yet another great and in-depth critique!

If I’m being honest, i never planned too much on what I will paint to the details.. i just paint what i feel, so I can’t really tell here exactly what it is that she is feeling because it will reveal too much. But of course in creating it, I will unconsciously paint something that i never realize i put there (that’s why people’s opinion and interpretation become really interesting)

Your interpretation of this piece is exactly like that, i feel like you describe the meaning that i don’t realize i gave there, but it is indeed, there.

About the thorns, my explanation will be roses has thorns, and the reason why i put it on her right arm instead of left is she’s reaching the ‘Amen’ in Catholic cymbolsm, meaning she’s nearing the end of her prayer.

While This one represent repressed emotions, the relation between this one and ‘Remember Me’ is they’re both painted based on a same thing, but from different stage of emotions. In Remember Me, death is there but more of death of someone in a mental, not physical form. I did cope with my father’s death then, so it maybe there too, but it’s more of the first, not the second.

You indeed interpret very well, especially in the underlying meanings of an artwork. Thanks again for the wonderful critique, hope this answer your question

Yes, as i have said before, sometimes it is the artist's job only to draw out the pages, and for the audience to fill in the words. The artist sits mostly with the title, and can guide the story in a direction, but the best paintings, poems, songs, and generally works of art, can be interpreted in many different ways. Take Mona Lisa, there aren't many things that we can say for certain, but i think that there are tens, if not hundreds of pages to write a story (Well, the length isn't that important i think (kinda like a bonus), but more the different ways).

Wow... i can't believe i missed the connection of roses and the thorns from the rose bush.

Ok, so what? They move their arm band from the right to the left side in the middle of the prayer? If so, then cool, i did not know that. Also, maybe you should have added a wound or a mark from the band being there (if my assumption is correct). That would be a great example of how you can shape the story. If you do that, there becomes little doubt that the thorns had been there too, which means that they had been moved, and then one can wonder why, and then come to this tradition or something else.

It does answer my critique, thank you for letting me come with my thoughts, and keep up the good work.

The artist shows a lot of skill and technique in this piece! she has used warmer colours like; reds, oranges and pinks in here as well as occasionally using blue to balance it out and add a more dramatic contrast between the colour scheme. I love the transparency of the wash she used for the pale skin, and it warm colours, the tones are very soft and I like the even lighter highlights here!

The hair is very voluminous and i love the technique used here for the details of the hair! The fine brush stokes are add more interest and they show the direction at which the hair flows. I'm curious, what technique did you use? Was this just a rigger brush and controlled hand?

I love the splattering and dripping of colour, it's always a nice effect to give your painting one character! The colours on the girls shirt/dress seem to merge beautifully, especially since they do not produce murky colour, but rather keep their raw pigmented colour state. The speckles also incorporating are also very effective.

Well done, a really delightful piece!

For the hair, i use pen for the hair lines (rigger brush and watercolor too transparent for what I'm going for in this) then shade it with brush. For the rose it's with brush only. I use rigger brush for the thorns, eyebrows and part of the lashes.

The splattering and dripping is definitely the fun part of the painting process, glad you like it!

thank you so much for this critique, dear. Much appreciated

I just happened to see this on my group watch list and I am so glad I did.

Just her dress is simply beautiful. All the vivid colors you used for the entire painting to me, represents her soul. I love the thorns as well. I don't know if you made her eyelids a little pink so it could correlate to the rest of the image or if it showed that she was crying. Either way it is beautiful.
The flowers in her golden hair look so soft and I just adore how you made it look like the painting itself is almost; melting.

You are a wonderful and amazing artist. You really are gifted and skilled to posse such incredible talent that you can produce an image as emotional as this one. It takes effort to paint something, but it takes the artist's feelings and thoughts for it to express emotion.

This is just wondrous.
