Description Canon 1D MK III, Seven image HDR
This is one of the many places that I have seen for years in my travels through the Southwest US. Each time I would say to myself “I should stop and take some pictures” this time I did. Located just off of the road to Meteor Crater , Arizona east of Flagstaff, Arizona on Interstate 40.
This structure appears to have been made from the sandstone quarried from the hill on which it stands. I have no idea of it’s history but since it had copper pipe plumbing with a bath tub it couldn’t be too old. It may well have been occupied at some point but the manner of construction leads me to believe that it may not have lasted long. The only current resident that I saw is a raven who declined to be photographed.
I may rework this a bit later.

I look forward to seeing your version when you do stop next time.
In fact, depending on your itinerary, here is an interesting place to stay in nearby Holbrook Arizona > [link] and you might want to save an afternoon for the Meteor Crater > [link] which is further down the road on the same exit as the ruins.

Oh man, I had no idea about the Wigwam motel or I *would* have stopped. I pushed myself on to Santa Rosa NM instead ... we won't talk about exhaustion.

I definitely plan to take another trip west. I'm just not sure when I'll be able to swing it. I want to go back to Nevada and get more photos from there (I lost all the photos on my hard drive due to a ... person crashing my computer ... and I had a lot from Arizona and Nevada) too.

And here you send me temptation after temptation ... and I start my new job Thursday, with no vacation time for a year. Ah, well. Life. I'll get back out there eventually!

Not to worry my Lady! All of Kathy’s delightful pies are made with real (as opposed to caned) ingredients and she uses less sugar than most bakers would.
Good luck on the new job.

Its a great scene and the sky kicks. The foreground Castle is a great object but I wonder did you take any shots from further back with the castle less dominant? I'd like to see the sky dominate more.

Thank you.
I checked my archives but no I didn’t get any with more of the sky that day. I was so wrapped up in the structure that I sorta forgot about the sky. Skies like that are not unusual there so I may reshoot that someday.

I don’t know what it is about derelict buildings but there’s a lot that one can do with them artistically.

Ah, I think I know where this is. You should check out Two Guns on your way through town next time. It's between Flag and Meteor Crater and has quite a few old buildings like this. If you park at the old abandoned gas station at the Two Guns exit and head towards the ruins, you should also come across an old fault that has formed a fissure cave. It doesn't go that far back, but is fun to explore nonetheless.

JAHarrell In reply to Rhavethstine [2008-10-20 13:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the tip. I've been thinking about stopping at Two Guns for a while but I am always in a hurry to get where I’m going. The sky was just so perfect on the day that I stopped at The Raven's Nest that I told myself that if I had any notion of myself as a photographer, let alone any kind of an artist, I had to stop. The structure is clearly visible from I-40 and is at the meteor crater exit.

ive kickin myself for years to get my butt up there and see what there is to see. this is a great work.. the colors so rich. photoshop enhanced a bit makes it all just come right out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to klmarsala [2008-05-21 12:23:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
The vivid colors have more to do with the fact that I processed seven exposures each one exposure value apart with Dynamic-Phto HDR [link] before going into PS.
Next time that you pass by why not stop and take a few shots?
It might be an interesting subject for one of your videos. I have no idea who owns that area but there is no gate on the road and it does not appear to be posted.

This is an absolutely fantastic shot! I love it

I'm seriously wanting to get into HDRi but I gotta wait until I can afford a camera that does raw

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to Killearnith [2008-05-18 14:32:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
You can shoot three or more identically framed shots in Manual mode with your camera. If you set up on a tripod with your camera set to Manual Mode, keep the F stop the same but shoot a succession of images at least one stop above and below the idea exposure value. I looked up some data on your camera and this seems to be possible. I didn’t see that you have an Automatic Exposure Bracketing “AEB” feature which is the easiest way to do HDRi but you can still start your HDR adventure with your current camera.
Raw is the way to get the best images but your JPGs will do a fine job.

what software do you use for making HDR shots?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to CorazondeDios [2008-05-16 12:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I took the HDR from Dynamic-Photo into CS3, made a duplicate layer, used ReDynaMix HDR filter (which gave me a rather extreme HRD effect) and reduced the opacity of that layer to 45%

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CorazondeDios In reply to JAHarrell [2008-05-16 15:52:39 +0000 UTC]

My son tried to make an HDR in CS3, but for some reason, it told him that the photos "may be from different cameras" -- when, in fact, it was the same photo from the same camera.

It was frustrating for him since he was trying out HDR in CS3 for the first time. He's 14 and quite a gifted photographer.

Do you know how to circumvent that kind of error message in CS3?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to CorazondeDios [2008-05-16 17:33:33 +0000 UTC]

I've got to think about that.
CS3 is actually pretty good for that. Is he going through Bridge? I’ve been using Dynamic-Phto HDR lately [link]
