Description Out and about in Bristol last year, we stopped at College Green after a visit to Subway, and the sky looked like this.

Such sturdy clouds, so I grabbed this photograph of them.

Impressive building, especially from that angle.
Although I'm not a religious person, I do love looking at churches and the like.
Their architecture is so resourceful and detailed.

Great shot, that's a fav!

The building itself isn't particularly tall, but when I peered up at it through the viewfinder the bright blue behind and the dark stone made it seem huge. Glad you like this, I'm no expert photographer, so it was a pleasant experience to grab a photograph which I was pleased with.

James

I'm no expert photographer either. But it's just fun going out and shooting...
One day in October I did almost 100 photos within 3 or 4 hours.
More than half of the pictures I take I don't like afterwards and from the other half I deem only very few good enough to submit here.
So I can pretty much understand you.

Does Canada have no architecture that pleases you? I've not travelled at all, and I can't say I've ever thought to imagine what the buildings of Canada might look like, however I am now curious.

Oh yeah thats right I did comment, great, one point for Chris. We have very nice architecture in Canada but it in no way compares to England and Europe. Ottawa is like a mini London with all of our parliment building similar to yours. There are places in Newfoundland and other costal communities that have multicoloured shack-houses St. John's is a great example. Quebec city is probably the closest thing we have to a European atmosphere, I'm Quebequois and I dare say that we have far supperior arcitechture to the rest of Canada, but hey we are the French. But still Canada is very modern-cityish ergo very boaring and no character and houses are made from wood and side paneling. Suburbs flood our lands with such homogeneous becons of mediocrity. To appreciate Canada one needs to look at the nature, culture and arts (not architecture) but especial aboriginal arts (my favorite). Remember, we have to live in colder weather.

With a digital camera, and a sky this perfect, I did nothing but click the shutter. I'm really not much of a photographer, but a happy snapper instead.

This is a terrific, breathtaking shot. I love this type of architecture, it's so incredibly ornate and classic, and the angle at which it's shot along with the way you caught its shaded front contrasted against the much lighter sky shows the cathedral off to its very best advantage. I have only one objection and it has nothing to do with your excellent photograph: they could have come up with a more fitting clock, don't you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jahg In reply to mdog02 [2005-02-26 23:31:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, you're so right about that clock. I think they had to replace it relatively recently although I can't remember why. I'm not much of a photographer, so this is one of the very few pictures of mine that I really like. Thank you for taking a look, I appreciate it.

mdog02 In reply to jahg [2005-02-27 00:11:29 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome. They must have picked that clock for readability and it has that, but it stands out like a sore thumb against the cathedral's classic architecture. You know, judging from this photo I'd say you have a good knack for photography and you might want to think about developing it.

Thank you very much, indeed. I'm not much of a photographer, but when something as obviously lovely as this scene pops in front of my lens, well. Even I can push the button. I know what I like to see, and I saw it in this one I suppose is what I mean to say.

Oh, you added it to your Favourites too! - that's certainly appreciated.

Rich and magisterial things I expect, not everyday average nonsense.

I've resolved to make something more of my photography. I've bought all sorts of books on the subject, and I'm hoping I might have the natural talent of it. We'll see.

It is a lovely building, and the sky that day seemed particularly splendid. A lucky shot, and one of which I'm very proud considering I'm not much of a photographer.

Great perspective and angle to take the shot in alignment with the tower pointy thingy . I'll have to admit those clouds really are quite something impressive, I feel like they're being held there but trying to burst free and move on. They look very alive. If I stare at them a while it makes me feel dizzy .

This is one of only a handful of photos I've taken which I feel happy with. The day was getting on, and the light falling off so that the blue of the sky really threw itself at me. I'm not much of a photographer, but I'm learning slowly.

It is one of the many advantages of digital photography (presuming you have a large storage card with it). You can take hundreds of dreadful pictures and probably pick out a few good ones . Which camera do you use? No doubt a very beautiful one.

I bought myself a pair of 512MB Memory Sticks for my Sony DSC-F717 (Picture :: Review ) so I don't have any trouble in that regard. It's the finding of suitable subjects I have trouble with.

shuurajou In reply to jahg [2004-12-22 03:27:34 +0000 UTC]

Sony makes some good Camera's, especially that one. I had an old DSC-P51 for years and years, but eventually I decided to upgrade from the old 2megapixel one to a new Canon 300-D. I got that particular camera because I wanted to go SLR, but stay digital. That was the outcome.

The downside is that SLR's are big to carry around every day, and that now my money gets burnt on many lenses .

jahg In reply to shuurajou [2004-12-22 03:40:04 +0000 UTC]

It's rather a shameful admission, but I knew absolutely nothing about photography when I bought my camera. I was impressed with the quality of the pictures produced by a friend of mine with the Sony one, so I went out and bought the same model. I'm still very impressed with it.

Hmm, when you do get new lenses, you take photographs of salad.

Brilliant perspective - it builds up from that gothic building, touching and built of the earth, into the comparitively light sky beautifully as the dribs and drabs of the cathedral itself break away. It's as two halves of an entirely opposed display -- with both holding their own charm, but only revealing their true power and contrast when brought together and interlocked.

Impressive contrast. I'm sensing the symbolic contrast between the church and heaven that the church actually supposed to promote and represent, and how that has changed over the years.
