Description Portland Bill, Dorset UK.

For just minutes the sun was visible. I had taken a shot earlier of this scene before the sun had risen. When I saw that it might emerge from behind the cloud I had to run across rocky terrain with camera and tripod set up. I plonked my tripod down and had time (just) to frame the scene and capture the light.....

I didn't check the aperture setting on my camera, it was set to f18 because I had been shooting for maximum exposure time. A big regret. Due to diffraction this image is noticably soft and would not print as well as I would like.

NOTE TO SELF: never shoot above f16 again with my Canon 5D it really isn't worth it!

I'm glad I don't have the 5DMKii as it is really only usable to f11 maximum and that is not enough for sharp foreground to background landscape work......

This is a great example of diffraction and how to make the best of it.
We would love to use it as an example. if this is a problem then just let us know.

Thanks Drew, on my way to work this one, it was a real rushed snap shot - I know it doesn't look like it...

Well, yeah, ok, But it was a real spontaneous decision to go and potograph the scene and I had to leap over a fence and run as the moment unfolded.

I guess you can call that a snap shot then, it's more than meets the eye though!

nice work mate.

All I can say (without intending to start another all -out, and i've said this before), is that your putting too much thought into this diffraction nonsense. That shot is perfectly printable and sharp - theres nothing wrong with it. Adding sharpening with smart sharpen before printing is essential processing anyway. Every detail can be made out perfectly, and only you and severly obsessed / picky professionals will ever call you on it. But even then they'll have to concede that somtimes straying away from optimum is essential. Hell if I followed this whole diffraction thing I wouldn't be away from f/11.

If it was that bad shooting past the optimum aperture then manufacturers wouldn't allow support of it on the bodies / lenses because it would severly hinder reviews and sales figures. Some of them are restricted to f22 these days rather than somthing stupid like f/39 so I guess they've deemed f22 to be the absolute minimum acceptable.

Well, it's obviously soft compared to other images and sharpness is an essential for large printing but hey, I'm not a pro and I probably won't sell the image anyway......

It is essential in one aspect, but its not more important than content of the shot
