Description Imaginary Scene from the story of

Based on a war between human and a species of humanoid that evolved from animals. I was asked to make concepts of equipments, weapons and such.

To make the designs realistic and reasonable, I gave some thoughts about the background and logics of the entire spicies, thus the reasons for such equipments to exist.

The reason I create such amount of background data is because I dislike making up illogical things out of thin air, For example, a humanoid being evolved from rabbits woule have a different body structure, culture and thoughts from human, thus it would be illogical to throw something like a conventional laser rifle for it to use.

Unlike carnivore whose eyes are at front to allow better aiming and distance judging, herbivore such as rabbits would have its eyes more on side of its head to enable wider vision to detect danger. A human use rifle, for example, is unusable to herbivore evolved humanoid because its eyes are unable to adapt the aiming system of the weapon.

This is just one of the base data I thought of when designing the weapons.

Here are some of the thoughts [still quite random at this point] I gathered:

- The entire species would roughly divide into 4 major sorts: large carnivore such as tigers, small carnivore like snakes, large herbivore like cows, and small herbivore such as rabbits.

Now, if all these evolved species are living together as one nation, then...

The social caste system in early age would resemble the food chain in nature, being that animals that eat meat and have larger size often gifted with more intelligence and strength - it would only be natural for them to take the commanding positions of the society. Small herbivore on contrary, would be at the bottom of the caste system.

However due to long age of war with the human, a weakness is shown - animals on higher rank of food chain often lacks the ability of mass reproduction. Originally the soldiers would compose of carnivore who are natural hunters, but as the casualties rose endlessly high and the carnivores' numbers are rapidly thinned out, the rest of the species including herbivores are quickly needed to join the battles.

This act, when lasted for decades, has gradually crumbled the social system given that the carnivore has lost its power and more herbivores are taking important roles. Right now, most members in the humanoid species [except some hardcore extremists] had put the social caste behind them and focused on their common enemy - human.

- A human evolved from ape stands about 1.8m tall, therefore a humanoid evolved from rabbit should come around 1.4m, while a bear man would likely be 2.5m in full standing height.

Imagine what would the daily thing be for them to live together in same society - for example, doors: how high and wide should it be?

Given that there are such numerous amount of species in the nation, it's highly difficult to mass produce and standardize military equipments for every soldier to use. After two generations of efforts and field experience, a basic form of standard equipment and production line was finally formed.

In early stage the soldiers were once put in squads of different types of animal humanoids. The idea was to use each type's strength to aid and compensate each other. The equipment issuing to squads were more specifically designed for one particular type of animal humanoid to use - one man handling defence, one doing detection, one in charge of assault and such. However as casualties rose high and fightings became increasing chaotic, the idea was prove unrealistic, and production / design line return to the basis of "general equipment that's usable for everyone".

- Equipments

Unlike human who tends to use tools to aid and compensate their physical weakness, animal humanoids enjoy using their natural strength as weapons while using equipments to enhance such power.

All soldiers wear a special military suit called "node suit", which provides some form of protection and life support, The node suit earns its name by having nodes all over so the wearer can easily attach equipment pieces onto it. This way the components can have a general size and being mass produced, unlike before a sets of different sizes armor had to be produced to fit in solders of various kinds.

Notice though, that the same piece of equipment would be big on some soldiers and small on others. For larger animal humanoids, they are at a disadvantage since armor platings are covering less of their body area.

- Head

There were total three attempts to design a mass production helmet model for every soldier since the start of the war - and all three has failed. It's simply too difficult to make a logical design that suits the size and shape of every animal type.

Head protection, although critical, is eventually discarded to reduce cost and production time.

Right now only minor enhancement pieces are used in the field, such as the hearing aid that the rabbit humanoid in the image wears.

Some old models of helmets from previous mass production attempts still survive and used, such as one worn by the big character at the back.

- Body

The simple mark II body armor is by no mean anything advance nor powerful. Being only able to generate minor energy shield and sustain limited damage. It's simply the low cost and easy production that makes it the standard armor for field solders. Animal humanoid researchers are working tirelessly on new models that are said to be released soon.

- Hand

Ironically, this technology was first stolen from human and adapted surprisingly well into the animal humanoid soldiers.

The kinetic blaster allows the user to control a limited amount of force energy to use it as shield or power fists. The weapon can also launch force energy shots at enemies but is highly inaccurate at long distance. This design allows even the herbivore to effectively use till some degree. [It can now see where it aims.]

Apart from few types, most animal humanoids prefer close combat due to their primal nature and to compensate the inability to aim and judge distance that most of them have. The kinetic blaster works pretty well in this style, allowing them to punch numeral human enemies into pieces with a blink of eye once getting close. This makes them horrifying opponents in rough terrain or urban combat.

The snail shell design of enables good durability and adaption to rough combat use, as Animal humanoids would occasionally use their hands to help their sprint.

- Leg

Every animal humanoid soldier is issued with mark II power leg. This simple, bulky component is halfly based on steam and springs, making it highly durable and adaptive in field in comparism to complex electronic equipments that's costly and easily-malfunction. Easy to mass produce and repair, it's however very user unfriendly and requires alot of experience to adapt.

The power legs enhance sprint, jumping, kicking power by multi-level degrees, granting horrifying physical strengh in the field. A soldier, with its heightened natural senses can avoid enemy fire, sprinting fast, jumping high, then, as how they commonly use, turning on both kinetic blaster while dumping itself in the enemies - this act turns itself into a living cannon ball that's enough to destroy heavy armor vehicles or a group of enemies in radius - The soldier itself, protected by the shield, armor and its natural strength, would remain unharmed in this process.

With its speed and power the legs can also used to climb walls, buildings, hills and cliffs at frightening speed.

Holy mother of God, that is a lot of thought that you put into this.
I love the part about rabbits not having the depth perception to properly aim a gun, very good catch.

absolutely amazing.

It's confusing to see how so many species of animals could go from eating each other, to living in a structured society. Oh, and what about birds? They are some of the most intelligent animals around, it would be interesting to see how they would develop. Also, what about vehicles? And have you seen Gurren Lagan? The story kind of reminds me of it.

Yes I thought about the problem with food as well, and right now I have no complete solution to that. At this point I would assume they have meat and vege farm like human do. As human have not much problem eating monkeys, the animal society should be okay eating meat of unevolved herbivore cousins, especially the ones eating are the carnivores who are in upper caste of the society. I think occassionally "cannibalism" [a carnivore humanoid eating a herbivore humanoid] would happen due to the fact they sometimes can't control their primal nature. But overall the war should keep each of them closer together.

Imagine if human have a war with aliens of machines, the ideas of race, religion, nationality and such would be soon thrown away as we would need to band together to face a greater threat.

Yes I thought about birds too and I think they should remain able to fly, which can be an interesting addition to the army. If I get to specific animal info and settings I will work on that.

Vehicles too. I have drawn some ideas down but mostly failed creations - simply because the humanoids have too many varied sizes and shapes - thus creating vehicles usuable for all of them would become unrealistically large. For starter, how do you design the control panel? My solution so far is to have enhancement pieces that the soldiers attach to so each person becomes an individual "vehicle".

Brought Together by War...
Nice theme! ^ ^

The vehicles could have mental links to their head nodes, allowing any of them to control one, and the seats could mold to them. There is a material in development that consists of nano computers, that can be programed to form different shapes, some of which can even move on their own. I can't remember the name of the technology, but I saw it on a show called Nextworld. It may solve some of your dilemmas.

One word: WOW.

I don't know if I can help but just give a bit of feedback on this thought process (I love this kind of banter)

These animals, are they ascended humans? Or regressed humans. When I hear that they have soo much animal qualities I wonder if they now have litter's like most animals do.
Are they soo far gone that the Animal survival mentality is ingrained to the point that they have no "specialists."

When it comes to things that aid in the field I like what you've come up with, and their technology sounds like it is quite on par.
A type of mirrored visor could be used for a type of special herbivore unit - but that comes back to if it's a big pack, or a fully realized society.

The breeding, could they perhaps breed specially to create a better lineage, or would that dilute the powers that they readily possess? Obviously animals (to my knowledge) don't share uncommon fears, but they are part human, a leadership would become a vital part?

Lastly (I'm really sorry, heh) if they do mass produce litters I would think the most conventional means of equipment is a powerful metal that can be placed over the vitals (organs, arteries) on the node suit.

They sound like they take the Zap Brannigan approach to war.

You must be a treat to work with 8D

From what I know, the setting is that as we are evolved from apes, the animal humanoids are descends of various other animals in nature. The evolution process has make them to walk two legs [but sometimes still 4 legs] and closer to a humanoid form. I would assume the major differences from human would be the face / head, the body would be slightly arcing, and the legs would be rather different [which would be much more powerful and kicking] seeing how most animal's legs are differ from apes.

Right now I only got into the general concepting and yet into details of specific animal. Data and ideas that I came up are still quite early stage and unsorted at this point.

Personally I would assume the idea of "specialists" would be much stronger in an animal society, given that each type of the members has their own natural strength. [e.g.: Rabbits have specially good hearing, while no one can sprint faster than leopards] Thus the idea of "a squad with members compensating each other with their strengths" mentioned above was used - say if one type of animal is good at assault, one expert in defense, while one excels in detection, when they work in teams the effect would be much better than letting everyone doing assault, defense and detection at once - The problem is that when they lose one of the members [which happens often and quick in heat of combat] the rest of the team becomes drastically powerless - Thus the idea was eventually thrown away and go back to "letting everyone doing everything at once" - it's dumb, but at least it's safer.

About the breeding. Basically as we know it's against nature's rules for animal types to crossbreed - it's physically and mentally inaccessable to most. Although few examples such as lion x tiger exists, the children often seen as a defection as they have no reproduction capability. Unless their genetic engineering tech has reached a point [which I'm not sure they do in this story] to overcome this, it's basically out of question. Crossbreed between animals would be like human crossbreed with animals - it's most likely unthinkable for majority. [Although long term war and crumbling social system may result more cross-mating to happen.]

Fears grow as intelligence evolves I think, so as the animals becoming more maturing, humanoid form, the concept of "fear" would gradually becoming more resemble to human. [I have to think more on that] As for leadership, as I mentioned above, large carnivores often possess more intelligence and strength, thus naturally owns commanding positions in most cases. [On contrary to small herbivores]

The mirrored visor would be a good idea - thanks for that. Basically the aiming system for kinetic blaster works as such: user hold two arms straight and parallel to ground while both blasters send out aiming lasers, the user can easily see where they're aiming by moving their hands closer together and see where the lasers cross each other - this simple yet effective [although not best] design works equally well with both carnivores and herbivores eye structures. [They dont need to know the distance, just need to see if the lasers cross each other on the target]

he is X_X

The concept is that, Animaleans [Animal Humanoids] grew up on one side of the world, a completely different continent, while humans on the other. Eventually the humans just found them and yeah u_u.

Jalingon's done the dirty work of evolving that kind of history, but I'm satisfied with it : P.

Generally, Animaleans would produce litters, but some one the structure ideas we're looking for include a more hhuman structure [like, human body, fur, animal head]. But I rather like how he managed to use the legs on Ophiguris Oo [rabbit character depicted, you can guess he's kind of my character c:].

It's good to finally have a proffesional concept artist though xD.
