As you asked...what the picture means to me, mh... (it's my first critique, so .//.)
For me:
I think the story plays in the 19th century. A rich british family, that lives or moved recently to South America. Their little daughter is educated to be a "lady". But her parents are often bussy and her elder brothers got other things to attend to than play with their little sister, so she gets out - into the jungle and the wild lands around their villa - and becomes friends with the animals. They trust her and some trait her as their own offsprings. Oh, hope her parents never find out or she will be put in an internat - and her best friend, a harpy, will be hunted down. Because her parents are hysterical - 'speacially her mom. And her dad is all like "Meh - I got work to do, go away" O.o
Asides that, the picture makes me feel kind of .. happy. And a bit melancholy. As it looks a bit like the picture is a memory. All in grey colours and the shadow behind her. (okay, yes, the shadow belongs there.. I just.. nvm) - and that there's no background. Like a happy childhood memory. Though one of the special sort. So it makes me wonder what has become of the girl and if she was still fond of animals when she was a woman later. Maybe she lost it and at the age of 30, independend from her parents now as she was, she got back there? And met her old friend here again? e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>
For the technique:
I love how you did shadows and lighted areas, especially the girl's dress looks very nice and realistic. Also the bird's feathers are greatly done. The girl looks so cute and nice. And the harpie looks as majestic as harpies are. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> Great job.
Critique Points:
mmmh... I think the size difference between the girl and the harpie is a bit great. Also the question rises how she can hold such a big (and probably heavy) bird on her arm like this. Also the "outlines" on the harpie's head could have been a bit more stronger; this way it fades a bit into the background.
But those are just minor things.
All in all: Great job!

This is beautiful! Just the shading and tone and just feel of it is strange, like from a dream... Although that would be one heavy bird to carry on your arm like that!

Haha thanks! I agree, If I were to do this piece again I'd have her arm straight out rather than towards the viewer, as it becomes ambiguous over whether it's supposed to be foreshortened (so it looks like a mistake) or it's just supposed to be a huge bird
