It really is a shame when this happens, but what else could I do? I could tell they never cared so no point to keeping a connection.

Some bridges aren't worth keeping, in all honesty. Sometimes it's best to cut all ties and go forward with your life.
This one, despite how painful and sad it is, was actually a genuinely good time to draw. Those fire effects, and the perspective work, the bridge, all that. It was a good experience, felt like exorcising some demons in the process of working on it.
