Description

Today we look at the third-place winner of the NEW THOMAS AND FRIENDS characters poll. The only model character that was introduced in after season 7 to make the top 5. MOLLY!

In the model series, she was based on a LNER D15 "Claud Hamilton"
( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GER_Clas…).

But I decided to be bold and try something new. A new basis for her. As you may know, Rev W Awdry originally wanted Henry to be based on an Atlantic locomotive. But the artist William Middleton draw Henry as a 4-6-2 locomotive in the original artwork for “The Three Railway Engines”. One of the ways Awdry addressed this was by saying Sir Topham Hatt the First wanted to buy an Atlantic locomotive, but he was tricked into buying Henry instead.

As Wilbert Awdry wanted an Atlantic engine, I decided to change Molly’s basis into one. In this universe, she’s a Great Northern Railway Class C1. (GNR Class C1 (small boiler) ). The first Atlantic class tender engines in the UK.

1900: Molly was built and started work on the Great Northern Railway as a passenger express engine.

1923: When Molly came into LNER ownership, she was reclassified as a LNER Class C2.

1935: Molly and her brothers and sisters were withdrawn from service. Only her older brother “Henry Oakley” was saved and preserved as part of the national collection. Molly was due to be scarp, but she was brought by a private collector and since then, she’s been in storage.

1968: After over thirty years in storage, Molly’s owner past on and the bank decided to sell her to clear his delts. She was sold to a rail tour company and they restored her to full steam. She pulled rail tours for three years.

1971: The rail tour company Molly worked for went bankrupt due to poor advertising and low passenger numbers. Molly was worried that her fate this time would be the scrapyard. Thankfully, one of the rail tour’s volunteers was an old friend of James’ Driver and Fireman and he wrote to them asking for help to save their engine. Together, they made a plan.

One night, they used fake documents to get Molly to pull a goods train to Barrow in Farness, the station where the North Western Railway meets British Rail. When they arrive, they hid Molly on a siding and wait. That night, James volunteered to collect a goods train from Barrow. When he arrives he meets Molly and places her between him and the train. They pretended to the yard manager that Molly was a new Sodor engine and they were double heading the train. This plan works and James smuggles Molly onto Sodor.

The Fat Controller soon discovers their plan and decides to help Molly. He contacts Molly’s owners and buys her. She is repainted into NWR Blue and given the number 19. As Sir Topham Hatt didn’t need a new engine at the time, Molly is placed onto cover duty. This means if an engine is unavailable or at the work or if a train is too heavy and needs a second engine, Molly is called to help. As time goes on, more jobs and trains comes to Sodor and Molly starts working full time on the Main line.

1972: Molly has worked on Sodor for a year now and she also becomes close friends with James. They once talked about how James is painted in his favourite colour, red. Molly likes this idea and asks to be painted in her favourite colour too, which is yellow. Sir Topham Hatt agrees as a reward for her hard work and she is painted in a dark yellow with red lining.

Now a days, she still works on the main line as a mixed traffic engine. Molly is also seen a few times double heading trains with James. They are still best friends and LOVE working together.

Personality

Molly is proud of her strength and is happy to put it to use as one of Sodor's bigger engines. Molly has a peacekeeper attitude, tends to be rather sensible, and is looked upon as a "big sister" by some of the other engines. However, because of her sensitivity, she can be easily embarrassed or upset by conflict, and will steam away to avoid it, but will usually have the courage to do what she thinks is right. Molly likes to be as good as everyone else and wants the other engines to think the best of her.
