Description
In ancient Mesopotamia the vulture was seen as a cleanser of spirits.

People would see plague ridden, diseased bodies as a curse of mortal transgressions. Ancient peoples learned to place the bodies of the dead upon rocky areas where vultures would pick the bones clean and the sun would bleach them white and purify them of the 'curses'

After all was said and done, the bones of the deceased were clean and sun bleached and could be handled.
