I'd figure her modern coat is actually come kind of a camo coat, to blend in with their home planet pest, a pest that can kill you like an alligator, the Skull Lizards. You see the Skull Lizard hatchlings have a black and white striped pattern, in time the white will move up to the face and down the spine as it grows into Adulthood as the muscles are more tense and claws and fangs are sharp as barbed wire.
