wouldn't the oldest get the trident? you know she has 5 older sisters right?

We discussed this above. I think either all her sisters would have to have died (perhaps there was a tragic accident at the palace?), or perhaps didn't want the throne for some reason and abdicated. That's assuming that inheritance works under the sea in any way similar to how it works on land.

For some reason, I could only think that this could be set in an alternate universe where she never met Eric and grew up to be the only one left to defend the seas in her father and sisters' absence.

I guess I didn't put that much though into the backstory of the piece. I just thought it would be cool to draw a few Disney Princesses in my style (rather than aping the animation models), and to have a bad-ass Ariel wielding the Trident.
