Description Talk about a switch, felt it was time to take a break from drawing cartoon characters (and comics), and take a little refresher into the realm of . . . well, less-cartoony characters. =3

Many of you will have absolutely no clue who this chick is (unless you live in Japan, or recently had an appetite for fighting games).

Based on the Greek Goddess of the same name, SNK's Athena is actually one of the earliest examples of a true Video Game Heroine (much like Mario is one of the earliest examples of a true Video Game Hero xD) Athena was made to be SNK's answer to the Mario series, as her first game was indeed a platformer.

She originally starred in her namesake game, where she is displayed as a Princess in the Kingdom of Victory. She is insanely bored of the peaceful nature of her Kingdom, and hungers for Adventure. In her basement she finds "the Door that should never be Opened", and obviously, opens the door, which is actually a portal to another world currently dominated by the evil demon, Dante. And so, she hops in, takes off her dress to reveal her trademark red bikini, and goes on an adventure of a lifetime. xD

Athena was originally released in the Arcades in Japan, and later ported to the NES, which was the only version which made it to the US. Sadly though, many critics felt that Athena's first game was absolutely HORRIBLE, mainly because the controls were so bad, the game was virtually unplayable.

Despite the criticism, she did find popularity in her home nation, and she managed to get a pseudo-sequel called "Psycho Soldier", which takes place many centuries after Athena. In Psycho Soldier, you took control of either Athena's descendant, Athena Asamiya, or her new ally, Kensou (who was only playable as a 2nd player), as they journey to stop an evil army of demons from devastating Japan. Psycho Soldier is somewhat known for it's theme song, aptly named Psycho Soldier, which was popular in Japan. Luckily, American Arcades got Psycho Soldier also, but it was stuck with a less than stellar English translation of the Japanese Song. xD

From there, Athena and Kensou became regulars in the popular Fighting Series, King of Fighters. This is probably Athena's most common appearances of her entire career.

It was until the Capcom Crossover, SVC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom, that saw the return of "Princess" Athena, who now takes the role as the guardian of Heaven (much like Ghost 'n Goblin's Red Arremer is the guardian of Hell). She also made another fighting appearance in another crossover game (which was strictly SNK related), NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (which you can now download on Xbox Live ).

Her appearances in both games led to her becoming popular enough to gain an official sequel to her 1986 debut game, this time being called Athena: Full Throttle, which has only seen release in Japan due to being released on a system we Outsiders don't know shit about.

The story is more or less similar to the original, as Athena is once again bored of her duties and wants to go on another exciting adventure. Here she opens "The Door that Should Never Be Opened, B". Disregarding the advice of her maid, Helene, she jumps in, taking Helene with her, and another adventure begins. I won't explain much more about it since I've hardly seen shit from it, but I recall that you got to play as Helene as well as Athena.

Other than that, that's pretty much all I really know about SNK's brightest "Pop" Star. xP

The arcade version isn't any better, it's 3x's more unplayable than the NES version. I pretty much preferred the NES port than the Arcade version.

Mmm, I've always wanted to get into fighting games more. I've only dabbled in the Capcom side of things; much of the SNK-verse (and while we're on the subject even Guilty Gear territory) is still a gray area for me, outside of the popularity of the characters, that is.

well if you're into fighting games, I definitely suggest you give SNK's recent fighting games, and the Guilty Gear series a go

infact, if you check on Game Trailers, they have a Countdown of the top ten Fighting Franchises.
