Great closeup!

I was wondering if I may use this as a reference for a drawing? I would link back to your original and give you full credit.

I love the tones in this image, although I think it might be good if more sunlight was hitting the deer for more highlights and contrast. When I look at the composition, it feels a tad out-of-balance for me, maybe if there was more space between the antler and border to the left? Regardless, great image.

JamesWinslett In reply to jonesblachowicz [2013-01-22 00:26:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback. This was very shortly after sunrise on a misty winter morning, hence the low contrast and lack of highlights. I see where you're coming from regarding the composition - I tried to centre the image on his antlers, but this does leave his head slightly off centre to the left and maybe accounts for the out-of-balance feeling you describe. Personally, I would have preferred a few more contrasting colours in the image - the deer, the ferns, the trees, everything's very brown, which keeps this from being one of my favourites

Seriously, 0mm? You were this close to him? That's amazing... I have a 110mm lens and still haven't managed to get a good shot of deer. I'm trying though!

JamesWinslett In reply to Navina [2013-01-20 23:52:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha, no. My camera doesn't recognise the vintage lenses I use, so they all show up as 0mm in the Exif data. This was taken with a 70-210mm zoom from a distance of maybe 15-20 feet

Ahhh, gotcha. Still, 15-20 feet is very impressive.

A lovely shot, deer are skittish usually, so a good photograph here.

Thanks. Yeah, any big movements startle them - it took me about an hour to get this close.

A very wonderful picture! He looks very cute! Which lense did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesWinslett In reply to LindasAdventure [2013-01-18 17:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I used an old Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm lens at f/8 and full zoom

LindasAdventure In reply to JamesWinslett [2013-01-18 17:55:37 +0000 UTC]

No problem! Oh ok! For Nikon or Canon Camera? That must be a very very old lense, mustnt it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesWinslett In reply to LindasAdventure [2013-01-18 18:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Yep, older than me anyway. Mine was made by Kiron for Vivitar in 1976 and it's actually Olympus mount, which ironically is much easier to adapt to Canon's modern EOS cameras than Canon's own FD mount from that time. It's an amazing lens if you don't mind going fully manual and cuz it's so old, you can pick them up for a song on eBay. Most of the portraits in my gallery were shot with this lens

MAN this is awesome!!! I love the background because it blends in nicely with the subject with the gradient it has... the subject is just AMAZING!!! and those antlers...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesWinslett In reply to TheWritingDragon [2013-01-18 18:21:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. There was still a bit of morning mist in the air which helped to smooth the gradient from the orange bracken up to the frosted tree branches.

TheWritingDragon In reply to JamesWinslett [2013-01-18 18:29:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah! just enough to make the background soft but not enough to fade the subject

JamesWinslett In reply to ShaleseSands [2013-01-18 13:38:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It was early winter, but there were still lots of nice autumnal colours around, especially with all the bracken - you could hardly see the deer when they were laying down because they were so well camouflaged.
