Description Okay, so you could never call this the most interesting/original of Youmu compositions, and the reason is because I was just free-sketching, then decided I needed /more Touhou/. I was testing out my new 260gsm paper (it's acrylics paper, because they don't seem to make watercolour paper as thick as I want it) and watercolours, so I didn't make the scene very high-maintenance.

I really like this method of drawing, though it would help if it had an 'undo' option.

The mostly monochrome palette works really well with this piece. In therms of composition, it's fairly simple, but the use of an unpainted white space for Youmu's ghost half adds a lot to it. The only weak point would be the face, so you may have to practice more with drawing faces. the eyes look rather blank and unnerving, not to mention the fact that they are unequal in terms of size. The nose is a little too big for the anime style. Also, you could have erased the sketch lines on her ghost-half; it would look a lot better as an amorphous cloudy blob.

In a nutshell, despite some imperfections here and there, this is a very good painting.

Oh my, the first critique I've ever received :0 thanks for this, man!

I'm glad you like the palette; monochrome greatly reduces the headaches I have in picking colours, which is an even greater bane outside of digital art, so this was a joy to paint (actually the easiest lighting job I've ever done).

I did wonder about rubbing out the pencil of the ghost, but I thought communicating that the ghost has a spherical head and is beside her was pretty important to the composition; if it's all fully exposed whitespace, it could look flat - however, I might photoshop the lines out once I get a chance and report back, because I am curious myself.

The points you've brought up about the face were actually how I intended to present it; I was aiming to reflect the themes of the Netherworld which Youmu frequents (it is a mystic and discompassionate setting), so I styled her face as a semi-real doll's, rather than strictly anime-like. Thus, the nose isn't a tiny flick, and the eyes are quite glassy and non-directed and they scale with the curve of the face. I am very pleased you're unnerved by them, actually!

Very valid points, very good to hear! You've got some great Touhou stuff in your gallery, so I shall be having a meander through it after dinner and whatnot.
