Quite an astounding piece. The anatomical detail of the figure is quite well done, especially in the hands. However, I'm not sure what exactly the metamorphosis here is suppose to be. The base of the figure suggests that he is becoming man, from tree or nature. Yet the gas mask, which "masks" that the figure is in fact headless, suggests something more sinister. No one ever gets pleasant thoughts when they see gas masks.
To me, this work would seem to be a statement of man's metamorphosis from a being of nature to a being that exists outside of nature. This could be represented by the mask, which is meant to shield us or put up a barrier between us and an otherwise undesirable surroundings.

This was actually a request for a friend.. They had no particular need for meaning, they just enjoyed these three elements together.
Maybe the tile is misleading.
But, this artwork is very open to interpretation
