Maybe Kanae was a past winner of the duels. According to Akio the ideal ending would be him and Utena in the Castle. Maybe that happened with Kane, maybe she made it past the duels all the way to the duel called Revolution and handed Akio the Sword of Dios willingly, but just like with Utena the Sword was unable to open the Rose Gate. However, the key was she didn't fight back and as such Anthy didn't stab her in the back.
No wonder she hates Anthy so much, perhaps after Akio failed to open the gate he "wiped" her memory, but the feeling of disgust towards Anthy is a faint past memory rising to the surface of Anthy as her bride.

i recall that she ended up being a black rose duelist, but seeing her in a rose bride dress is fantastic. i love your work, and i intend to creep all over your gallery.

They look so beautiful, and yet...
This is the first time I've ever seen Kanae in a Rose Bride, and I'm really glad that someone finally drew her. I also like how both her engagement ring and Utena's rose glint in the light.
