Looks good but gun mantlet and barrel are totally wrong. Mantlet not wide enough and gun not a 7.5 cm,it's too thin. Not bad though, but the Tommy cooker would be blazing from the back not the front.

what is that weird texture effect on the hull i always see panthers have?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfiniteRespect In reply to LordOmegaZ [2015-01-01 00:28:14 +0000 UTC]

It's a special hull design the Germans put on their tanks. Its to stop mines sticking onto them.

InfiniteRespect In reply to LordOmegaZ [2015-01-01 16:06:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, actually, its a paste. They just put it on it to limit the amount of tanks destroyed by mines. Less need for minesweepers then

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LordOmegaZ In reply to InfiniteRespect [2015-01-01 19:02:21 +0000 UTC]

was it effective?

(reminds me of the british running copper wires around their ships to stop magnetic mines)

InfiniteRespect In reply to LordOmegaZ [2015-01-01 21:39:41 +0000 UTC]

A little, the Brits used it a bit aswell

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

SPAZtank In reply to InfiniteRespect [2015-01-01 05:59:33 +0000 UTC]

Actually it's not a hull design at all. It's an add-on paste you can apply to it. The stuff is called zimmerit Anti-Magnetic Paste. Once developed, germans used to put it on everything they had, but then as the war progressed they stopped due the to curing process of the past slowing down production. The job of the past is to prevent magnetic contact between the tank hull and magnetic mines. This prevents the mine from attaching and detonating, which saves the tank meaning less need for mine sweepers.Β

A paste? Huh

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SPAZtank In reply to InfiniteRespect [2015-01-26 13:46:23 +0000 UTC]

yup. thats why if you go look at pictures of german tanks you can see area's where the "texture" looks like it was "scraped" off or it just fell mostly around the corners.Β
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…
as you can see in this picture the origional zimmerit has fallen off leaving this corner, or rather shoulder, of the tank smooth compared to the rest of the zimmerit covered hull.Β

you know in WWII it took 3 or 4 shermans to go after 1 panther or tiger.

Blaque-Natas In reply to DRUNKEN-MAUS [2013-11-22 12:13:42 +0000 UTC]

and in some cases - most cases, it worked....

sometimes...it took five, or six Shermans...

but the strategy worked.

heaven forbid if a panther - or even a tiger, gets damaged...

you'd be waiting till doomsday to get parts.....

Gimme a StuG, or a Panzer IV anyday.

The commander of that panther needs to tell the driver to scoot back 2 or 3 meters.Β  In a hull down position it should be all but invincible against Shermans.Β  As it is now the lower glacis is painfully exposed.

yucecu [2013-07-04 17:17:30 +0000 UTC]

Later Shermans had a ''Firefly" variation with an 17 pounder anti-tank gun as the main armament. They were first put in service in Normandy Landings and fought toe to toe with Tigers and Panthers from range. Germany's one of top scoring and famous Tiger Ace Michael Wittmann was also killed by a Sherman Firefly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

warrior1944 In reply to yucecu [2013-07-18 08:06:53 +0000 UTC]

That is not confirmed since recent studies show that a Canadian Sherman III was the one which hit his Tiger from the side.

Some say a Typhoon/hurricane hit it and others say Firefly Witthmann was the 4 best ace.
