Nathanomir posted Lighting the Nathanomir WayDuring DAZ-da-way’s Art Swap Challenge, EclipseInPeril tried my style of lighting. He said he wasn’t sure what I used, but I thought he came darn close to copying it.
That made me think. I’ve never fully talked about what type of lighting I use. Well, why not? So, here is how I light my various scenes.
My style of lighting is not the final word in 3D lighting. Lighting is highly subjective, like figure shapes, and prop use. Each artist has his favorite method and type of light. This is just what I do. Dangerguy01 lights his scenes like a movie set. EclipseinPeril prefers Film Noir lighting. RagingCyc0ne likes dark scenes with lots of light emitters. Lady-Quantum uses a studio style three point rig. If you see someone’s lighting and like it, ask how they do it. We’re a friendly bunch and will often share techniques.
I work in Iray, and use five types of lights:
HDRIMesh LightSpotlightLight EmitterPoint Light
Each has its benefits. E, and I decided to try out his method of mixing an HDRI with a mesh plane. Luckily, I created the plane after posing Fantasma , and it lit her up quite nicely. Figured no one would mind if it stuck around.
