Princess Reza, confined to the most lavish prison cell the world had ever known, had grown accustomed to her sister's unannounced visits. Queen Azina saw to it that Reza had what she needed to live, and even the odd comfort, but she was never free to leave, and her decorative bonds remained as a constant reminder that she was a slave.
Today's visit was different. Kolagath, the former warlord who had won the people's hearts through his unbridled bloodshed in the Grand Arena, accompanied Azina. Reza had met him before, and his intense gaze left her feeling sick and dirty. She'd known then there was no reasoning with him, even with her innate influence over the hearts of others.
The slaves, blindfolded so as not to make eye contact with Reza, pushed her toward the Queen's Champion. Kolagath clutched Reza's chin, his fingers hot, sweaty, and disgusting. His rancid breath washed over her as he leered.
"Remember, Kolagath," said Queen Azina, "do what you will with her tonight, but do nothing she cannot heal from. She need only be reminded of her station."
"As you wish, my Queen." He snapped his fingers, and one of the slaves handed him a silver goblet from Azina's personal collection. He squeezed Reza's cheeks, forcing her lips open and tipped the goblet's wine into her mouth.
"Drink," he said. "And save your tears. You just might enjoy this, if you try."
As the wine stung Reza's tongue and throat, her blood warmed, her skin tingled, and heat burned in her core.
Let him be satisfied quickly, she prayed to whatever spirit would listen. None did.
