i dont think you would really need to do much with the back ground. photocopy it and just paint water colour stripes, if that looks good just go for it. this image seems pretty good anyway. why need a background?

I like that mask, and the texture to the hair... As for the background, I always have trouble with those, myself
The way his feet are, he doesn't look like he's really STANDING, so he could be floating or something... What you have behind him already kind of looks like smoke, or a tree branch... there could be clouds of smoke behind.

Maybe something along the lines of floating above a temple at night. Have the temple only visable on one side or both and then have moonlit hills further back... idk, that's what I imagine when I look at the image. Maybe something along the lines of [link] ... Just an idea.
