A new hero to be admitted into Teen Titans Academy and the first friend/crush of Jon Kent, Beacon makes her debut into the DC Unlimited. A recent edition since DC Rebirth, Beacon navigates through the super heroics she finds herself in. Trying to live up to Jon's example and the example of Superman, while working with personalities that seem larger than life.created by Peter J.Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, Beacon first appeared in Superman Rebirth#1 in August 2016. Her real name is Kathy Branden and she was the first friend that Jon Kent has known, she's also the first person to know about his super heroic origin. The story plays out as so: Kathy and her grandfather were aliens from a planet attacked by the Krogg. After the rest of her family died, she and her grandfather, Kobb Branden, were taken to earth with Manchester Black in order to survive. At around age ten, Kathy moved to a dairy farm in Hamilton county, becoming neighbors with the Kent family.[
Kathy first met Jon when she bore witness to him attempting (and failing) to save his mother's cat. She would attempt to properly meet him later that day, but the boy was too distressed at the situation to respond.[2]
It would turn out that Kathy was much more than she seemed to Jon and even his friend, Damian . When Damian started to accuse her of knowing more than she let on, Kathy didn't hesitate to strangle him while lifting him in mid-air...with her mind. To make matters more complicated, not only are Kathy, her grandfather, and the people of Hamilton County actually aliens, but they were in cahoots with one of Superman's enemies: Manchester Black , who was seeking to turn Jon against his own father.
However, when Manchester killed her grandfather in cold blood, Kathy swiftly changed sides to align herself with the Kents.
ome time after the Manchester Black incident, Kathy resolved to call herself "Beacon", complete with a new costume. It didn't take very long for Maya Ducard , who had become a scouter for Superman, to start butting heads with her. However, before the situation could escalate, the portal in Kathy's ship became unstable and released Boyzarro . As they attempted to fix the portal, Robzarro and his pet Tiny came out of the portal and attempted to strike up a friendship with Maya. Maya was less than pleased with Robzarro's lack of tact.[3]
Kathy would help Maya, Superboy, and Superman in their attempt to save Htrae .[4] . Kathy would later work in a snack bar with Maya, Boyzarro and Robzarro at the Hamilton County Fair.
In recent memory, Maya has not been seen in further titles since the Peter J. Tomasi era in the Superman books. But here in the DC Unlimited, she is given much more prominence. Under Cyborg's leadership and high recommendation from Superman, she, Jon, Maya, and Damian have become recent students in Teen Titans Academy, alongside other young heroes in the DC Universe. This is where Maya's relationship with Jon is now more explored with the boy's powers manifesting still. She's also very protective of him, due to the fact that Jon and Teen Titans Academy member Crush have a seemingly strained relationship. Still as a new member of the superhero life style, Maya is still adjusting to it, while for years she and the people Hamilton had to remain in hiding. But much like her friend, she embraces her role as a member of Teen Titans Academy with her chin held high.
- Alien Physiology : Due to her heritage, Kathy possesses very powerful psychic-based powers.
- Psionics : Due to her heritage, Kathy has a rare gift that can help her sense certain aspects of other beings, such as psychic abilities.
- Psionic Energy Manipulation : Kathy has been shown advanced control over psionic energies, allowing her to generate powerful psychic shock-waves capable of causing physical and mental damage.
- Empathy : Kathy is able to mentally detect the auras of others, which allows her to detect emotions and see through deception.
- Telepathy : Kathy can sense upcoming danger, read minds, and mentally communicate with others at will. She has been shown to telepathically communicate across vast distances.
- Precognition : Kathy has a limited ability to foresee future events.
- Mind Control : Kathy can control the thoughts and minds of others.
- Enhanced Senses : Kathy has a natural sensitivity to universal vibration.
- Telekinesis : Kathy has the ability to levitate, control and manipulate matter and energy with her thoughts. Such as when she easily levitated Damian, as well as bending Jon's heat vision around her with a single hand gesture.
- Telekinetic Aura : Kathy can project a psychic aura around her body, which grants her increased physical strength and durability.
- Telekinetic Flight : Kathy can lift herself and move through the air to simulate flight.
- Telekinetic Blasts : Kathy is able to project telekinetic blasts that can damage, repel, crush, or destroy targets.
- Force Field : Kathy can create a telekinetic field to shield her and her teammates from physical attacks.
A rookie of the year, Beacon hopes to improve and better herself for the sake of not only Hamilton County, but also to her friends, the world and to herself
