Description In reference to this art piece where I detailed the different types of real robots, I briefly defined "soldier mecha".

Soldier mecha are often smaller then normal depictions of giant mechs. They dont act like tank mecha popular in the west, nor do the act like flying samurai mecha of the east, they are an in between, they act like soldiers.

This is just some of the most influential series and games that realy impacted my tastes and also directed my art.

Gasaraki (anime): a short series with a weird ending and some pacing issues, but honestly the mecha action is very grounded and unique.

Obsolete (anime): while it lacks in an overarching narrative, this mini series is amazing with its worldbuilding, and its mecha in a modern setting realy inspired me to start on my colony wars 2060 setting.

40k (tabletop wargame): I got into 40k realy hard at the end of 6th edition. Orks was my main army (deathskulls), and I loved their dreadnoughts. When I realized I can have an army of mechs I was hooked. Unfortunately due to poor balancing by GW I rarely got any victories with it and is eventually why I left the game around 8th edition when I got tired of following the rat race that is 40k rules changes and balancing. But I realy got the hunger for "armies of mecha " from this experience.

Patlabor (anime): I loved the 1st two movies. The way the mechs are incorporated into the world is very organic. The clothes joints of the labors would inspire my style for the colony wars 2060 setting.

Battletech (wargame/video game): playing mechwarrior 2 was my 1st experience with a mech game. The lore for BT is extensive and very grounded in its conflicts and struggles. While battletech is a tank mech franchise, there was a small segment of lore that stuck out to me. When I read the TRO 3060 I was hooked at the sight of the protomechs. They were never popular in the wider community, but I loved their unique position of somewhere between battle armor and battle mechs, that act like soldiers more then tanks.

Votoms (anime)/heavy gear (wargame): while different settings, votoms inspired heavy gear. Votoms shows a bleak future where mechs and their pilots are cheap canon fodder. Votoms also would inspire the obsolete anime I've already listed. This is what I prefer for my mecha, expendable, and inexpensive. The mech is not some super machine that flys or is super durable for no reason. They are vehicles not unlike what we have today and are mass produced.

Titanfall (video game): this is probably the 1st time I ever played a game that actually gave me the feeling of piloting a soldier mech. The "titan" acts like any normal soldier with rifle, and it's not a master of the battlefield as it is vulnerable to skilled and mobile infantry. The titanfall franchise is essentially dead (RIP), but I will never forget how it is probably the only game that gave me the experience of my preferred mecha.

There are other franchises, but they are more like honorable mentions....and i only had so much space to put mecha. What I drew was just the most influential. And of course I didnt write down all franchises I know, such as armoured core, blue gender, flag and etc.
