Sidious and Vader were the ones who claimed that The Death Star was nothing compared to the significant power of the force, especially the Dark Force. There are somethings darker than the eyes of the Dark Force. Sidious would practically crush the entire Planet if he wanted to. He was the most powerful Sith Lord of all time!

One-to-one Sauron's magic abilities and immortality trump the all-powerful Sith.
Army fight-Sidious. Just a small number of Stormtroopers with improved aim waste Sauron's troops. Then, they hold up Sauron so that Sidious can make him "experience the full POWER of the Dark Side!"

Movie-Sauron (especially Sauron from "The Hobbit") vs Movie-Sidious = Sauron wins.
Movie-Sauron (LOTR) vs EU-Sidious (Especially DE-Sidious) = Sidious wins.
Movie-Sauron (Hobbit) vs EU-Sidious = Sauron wins unless Sidious can somehow harm his incorporeal image.
Book-Sauron vs Movie-Sidious = Sidious wins.
Book-Sauron vs EU-Sidious (Especially DE-Sidious) = Sidious wins with ease.
Overall, Sidious is far more powerful.

Sauron, easily. He could easily do what the Death Star does with his own fist.

Sauron. The Ring can't be destroyed by the Death Star, only in the Mount Doom. If Palpatine blows up the Middle Earth, he will destroy the only place when he can destroy the Ring, becoming Sauron immortal.
But I don't think the Emperor be so stupid to do that, it's too easily. He'll try to make Sauron join to the Empire, he will make the lord of Barad-dûr becomes a unstoppable and inmortal hitman, a great asset to the Empire.
If Sauron don't want to join the Empire, he can destroy Sidious, Vader and the Death Star easily. I don't know if the Ring can protect him to the space vacuum, but Sauron would be the winner.

Sauron, even if Sideous would kill Sauron, he would just get corrupted by the one ring after which Sauron reforms and wins.

Sauron would have won without the slightest doubt, Sauron is a maia, a mighty angel in Tolkien's world. Both Gandalf, Saruman and the Balrog were Maiar but Sauron belonged to the oldest and most powerful in the order. Of course the Valar as Melkor were even more powerful. But when Sauron forged the one ring of power, he became more powerful than that Melkor / Morgoth had been at the end of the First Age.

Emperor Palpatine could of course have blown the whole Middle-earth to dust with the Death Star, but in a fight between these two, I believe Sauron would have won. But it is also difficult to compare two such different universes.

Use the Force. In other words, telekinesis. Also, he is skilled with a lightsaber and uses Force lightning.

Additionally, the Emperor managed to whup every Jedi Knight and Master who came his way, and was only defeated when Darth Vader (the One who would bring balance to the Force...yeah, right) chucked him down a shaft on the second Death Star.

Sauron, on the other hand, first got his ass handed to him when a mere human cut off his fingers (more crutially, the fingers that also had the One Ring on one of them), then lost forever when the ring was plunged into the fires of the mountain from which it came, clutched by the insane former-hobbit Gollum.  That's...kind of pathetic.

*Nag* But, let's not forget that Sauron ushered in an Age of Darkness where people feared to leave their homes and the sight of his Tower of Barad-dur brought brown trousers. Not to mention, Gandalf feared Sauron, as well as most of the other wizards. That's why Saruman joined him in the first place.

Maybe so...but it's kinda hard to take a villain seriously when he's just an eyeball atop a tower.

NagandEmerald In reply to John-the-Enforcer [2014-04-01 12:14:16 +0000 UTC]

*Nag* He's not just an eyeball. The eye is just the manifestation of his will exerted on Middle Earth.

NagandEmerald In reply to John-the-Enforcer [2014-04-01 12:17:00 +0000 UTC]

*Nag* Look, it's the manifestation of his will. What it did was it activated a primal fear that every living thing on Middle Earth shared in common. Gandalf was even afraid of the eye, and he, as Gandalf the White, was a match for Sauron.

John-the-Enforcer In reply to NagandEmerald [2014-04-01 12:49:27 +0000 UTC]

But it still just stood there, atop a tower, while orcs, goblins, and Lord knows what else carried out his bidding.

NagandEmerald In reply to John-the-Enforcer [2014-04-01 12:51:59 +0000 UTC]

*Nag* Alright, yes, he did have armies of brainless orcs to do his bidding, but remember, when we see him in the Fellowship of the Ring and the book of the same name, Sauron is more capable of fighting gods than anyone else I know...well, excluding Galactus and the rest of the rabble.

Eru Illavatar vs. The Creator (From The Wheel of Time series)

Mandos vs Darth Plagueis

Gollum vs Darth Vader
