"Wide" cheeks, big round eyes, pointy little sharp chin, skinny proportions (even for anime) and billowing hair - definitely Utena style right there.

I'm glad you think so - it was definitely what I was going for in this image!

Well, Utena has an extremely distinctive style - it's like taking the same style that was used in "Sailor Moon" (same studio, after all) and then exaggerating it and transforming into a nearly deliberately unrealistic, artistic, classical extreme and you've captured that pretty darn well. Rhiannon looks rather different done this way, but I think just about anybody would.

No kidding - just like the Utena characters would look very different in another style.. XD

Oh, indeed. I mean, I'm so used to seeing Utena's art style that I hesitate to think of seeing what they would have looked like in, say, Naruto's art style or even One Piece's heavily stylized art (which is actually why it took me forever to even start liking One Piece - I didn't like the art - and that's rather sad, because One Piece is actually just the sort of thing for an Age of Sail fan like me). Or, come to think of it, I wonder what Utena, Juri and the others would look like done in classic Disney style, eh?

Disney Utena? O_O

I heavily prefer the old early 90s cartoon, "Pirates of Dark Water" to "One Piece". I can't get into it at all. Naruto's completely turned me off from it - it's just a show for the sake of battles now. It's the modern Dragonball - just as Bleach is. Another way to view them is as an evolution of Yu Yu Hakushou - though in my opinion, they lose to DBZ, but win over Hakushou for better show.

Ha, ha, well, I wasn't meaning anything to do with the storytelling. I have a rather odd opinion about Disney, myself - I appreciate the movies as classical milestones of American animation and I enjoy myself as much as anybody else when I'm at a Disney theme park, but otherwise I'm quite jaded about the subject matter. If I were to have kids, I'd rather have them watch Utena over Disney movies any day because Utena does a better job of making people think about how flawed our world really is and forcing people to question what you usually take for granted in society, while kind of presenting it in the form of an eerily beautiful, broken modern-day fairy tale with Napoleonic military trappings and lots of fencing... but yes, I was joking about how the Utena characters would look like if the Disney studio had drawn them. Pretty shocking, huh?

You know, I do like "One Piece" now, and I've made my peace with the series' art design, but it isn't one of my favorites and I make a point of not taking the show very seriously because it's like what you said - little more than "Bleach" or "Naruto" with a bit of sailing ship lore thrown in. I like it because of the wacky ship designs and some of the larger-than-life plots, and I don't think the idea was all that bad, but sometimes I really feel like "One Piece," "Naruto," and "Bleach" really should have ended by now - it's as if all we are getting these days are filler arcs.

I am not as familiar with "Yu Yu Hakushou" as I should be, but I'm very familiar with the "Dragon Ball" series. I think DBZ could have been a lot shorter and just as epic - it was famous for those long, drawn-out fights, but it absolutely deserves its place as a classic and as a model for the shows that followed it and I still have a lot of nostalgia for it - and for the original "Dragon Ball," which sometimes feels like something special to me because it was a time before all the alien stuff got injected into the plot - so it felt more like a "Journey to the West" reference, it was definitely a product of the times as the Red Ribbon Army was pretty much a stab at China's infamous "People's Liberation Army" (I was born in Communist China and my grandfather was a Party member, I have the right to be that snide about them. >_< ) and there was a lot of the feel of a classic martial arts movie in the story of little Goku and Krillin, the kind of thing Jackie Chan might have done when he was young.

Somewhere along the line, by GT, I can't help but feel like all of that got lost somehow as they tried to make the story more and more epic, but I do feel like GT concluded in a good place. I know next to nothing about the DBZ remake - DB Kai - though. ^_^;

I think unfortunately, Disney faced a commercial decline that coincided with their storytelling decline. After all - there was a big scandal about them wholesale lifting "Lion King" from a very famous Japanese classic Anima (Kimba). And I think having a lawyer running the studio (Eisner) had a lot to do with that decline and the terrible treatment of the artists - to the point Don Bluth took many of them when he formed a studio because he treated them better. Lawyers like Eisner may be good with "bottom lines" and fact and figures, but they're terrible with what makes pioneering creativity. Even Roy Disney was upset with him!

I actually don't have too much to say about the Dragonball series - I do think they could have done some things better, but that's my opinion. Clearly, their formula worked, and many people buy and watch not only it, but "One Piece", "Naruto", "Bleach", and even to some degree "Soul Eater". But they aren't formulas I like or look for. If I want an action one, I prefer on the lines of GetBackers.
