Description This is a picture of local TV newscaster Rosemary Plybon that I did for a class presentation. I don't think it looks like her that much, but the drawing came out ok anyway.

So, if you check my profile, you'll probably notice that I do a lot of portraits, and I consider myself to be pretty good at them (though that's about all i'm good at X.x )
soooo, some advice.  When you're doing your sketch (before the shading), take either tons of time (measuring everything out and being super careful), or take no time at all (looking mostly at your reference, holding the pencil lightly, and not being too concerned about details).  I use both techniques, it just depends on how i'm feeling.
Now, once you've finished your sketch, show it to somebody who would recognize who the person was if you just showed them a normal picture of that person, and if they can recognize who it is from your sketch, good job.  If they can't recognize it, change some things or start over.  This process sucks, it really does, nothing is worse than drawing an unrecognizable portrait (trust me when I say I've done it a lot), but being forced do redo things like that is awesome experience.

Then if you haven't tried it, try toilet paper for blending.  All of the blending I did on this self-portrait (below) was with toilet paper, and it worked really well to create soft blends.
