The following days were especially hard on the young Prince Taka. After his first-and rather short-visit to the Elephant Graveyard, his parents confined him to Pride Rock until the next full moon. The Prince tried to make the most of his imprisonment by exploring his home even further than he was used to. He would go looking for little creaks and cracks, trying to memorize how the rocks of the kjope they lived on sloped and stopped and then jutted out at an opposite angle. Sometimes he would even challenge himself to walk the length of the ledge with his eyes shut, just to see if he knew how far it went. Thankfully, he always lost his nerve when he got about halfway down the stretch and opened his eyes again. He discovered some tiny mouse holes and spent hours attempting to catch the little silver animals that darted in and out of their homes. As entertaining as the tasks he gave himself were, Taka soon found himself quite bored no matter what. Even Sarafina and Sarabi, who came to visit him in his ‘lonely prison’ couldn’t cheer him up that much anymore.

“I feel like a prisoner.” Taka grumbled one day to Sarafina, who came alone that day to see him.

“It can’t be that bad.” She insisted.

“Oh, it is! You have no idea! I’m stuck in this place doing nothing but sitting around almost dying of boredom!” He whined. “I can do nothing but stare at the walls of this forsaken den! I want to hunt, Fina! I want to feel the grass under my paws, the wind on my face! I don’t know what to do.”

“Well, you have Sarabi and I, and your mother Uru. We come to see you as much as we can! I understand your boredom but you aren’t alone. What about Mufasa? Surely he-“

“Mufasa?!” Taka snarled. “Mufasa was the one whole told on me! He’s probably happy I’m in trouble. Stuck here while he roams free with our Father!”

“Sarabi said he feels guilty.” Murmured Sarafina.

“And he should! It’s his fault! I was already on my way back home when he and my dad showed up. If he really cared about me, he would’ve gone after me himself instead of sending Father! It was his fault I was angry in the first place. Why hasn’t he even apologized yet? He’s my brother!” Taka snapped.

Sarafina sighed. “Maybe he wants to? Taka, you can’t blame this solely on him. I’m sure he doesn’t want to get you in trouble.”

“Then why haven’t I heard a single word from him since?” Taka argued. “Shouldn’t he say something to me?”

“I don’t know.” The lioness glanced over her shoulder and rose to her paws slowly, saying. “I should go. Hunting Lessons and all that.”

“So soon?” the Prince rose up as well, suddenly regretting his wasted his time with her complaining. “You can’t stay for longer?”

“No. I’m afraid not. If I want to be a better hunter than you, Taka, I’ll have to work hard!” She grinned and nuzzled him.

He leaned into her touch, purring softly. “You already are.”

Sarafina giggled. “I’ll come visit you again when I can.” Then she turned and left the den, and let Taka back to his stewing.

Although her visits lightened his heart, they became shorter and less frequent with each passing week. Taka finally gave up on learning every single bend and twist of his home toward the end of his captivity and took more to just lying in his den for hours, thinking. Pondering.

Dwelling.

His mind seemed to flock to the Elephant Graveyard and the Hyena every chance it got, remembering everything he observed there that day. Because of the so-sudden trauma of seeing those beasts in action, sitting with the memory now-after a while-revealed things to him he didn’t notice before. He recalled all the dog-like creatures tearing into their food, yes, but some of them stayed behind while others chowed down. He made a mental note of their numbers and how most of them moved in different groups led by a single beast. Taka found that they coordinated themselves in a loose yet strangely comfortable way around their food and easily maneuvered themselves within the whole area. The different ‘packs’ operated like clockwork, almost as if they had a schedule locked into their minds. But most of all he took extraordinary notice of a single female hyena, who stood apart from the crowd of black-grey scavengers and watched them all with a certain amount of higher authority. Taka noticed they had a conscious quantity of ‘law’ and that they followed it rather seamlessly. They were not ‘civilized’, no, not like his kind was. However they still held a fair grasp on the concept of intelligence and comprehension of tactics when working with others. The hyenas were a curious species, one that his brother Mufasa and King Ahadi seemed to fear.

But Taka would not be afraid.

He would be different from them. He would show Ahadi just what bravery was! Then, he would be the one chosen to be king. His father would choose him over Mufasa because he refused to be terrified of the very animals they feared.

Taka vowed once he was freed from his enslavement inside Pride Rock, he would visit the hyena once more in the Graveyard and learn more about them.

I wrote the chapter during my English-Theo classes at school and edited them with the help of my friend . I was going to do one long chapter to cover this and his visit, but I decided not to. I’ll just be doing little installments here and there while I attempt to pick my grades up off the floor. (THEY’RE HORRIBLE RIGHT NOW.) Sorry if you wanted something longer, I just really have no time.
