Robin Williams was a hero to me on so many levels. When I was a child, he was my earliest comedic role model. When I was a teenager, he was the dramatic conduit for my performing aspirations. And in my early adulthood, he was my model for the man I wanted to be--an adult with the heart of a child. In the movie "Popeye", Robin not only played my cartoon hero to perfection, but his rendition informed the way I saw the character in all other media. In the best possible way, Robin Williams was, is, and will always be Popeye to me. And there can be no better icon for the man and his place in my heart than that.

He was a great actor and voice actor for the films Jumanji and FernGully. I'll miss him a lot.

He will be missed. I actually liked him as the classical cartoon sailor in the Robert Altman film. He was my inspiration for comic timing and caricature. You captured his character marvelously.

Yeah, I noticed that then news outlets didn't show anything from Popeye. I noticed that Robin really wanted to cut loose, and he did to the extent that the scenery would let him (i.e. not much). Critics panned it, and it tanked at the box office, but I remember liking it when I saw it on video during the VHS black clam shell box days of yore. Nice tribute to a role of Williams' that needs the love.

I remember seeing Robin Williams as the Genie when I was a boy, and loving that character. I'd imitate him, and always try to make my characters as magically flexible as him. When I was a teen I saw Jumanji and Bicentennial Man. Jumanji made me laugh a bit, and Bicentennial Man really shaped my thoughts on robots and what it means to be human. Then....Then I saw Hook and (well, years later admittedly) everything changed for me. I realized that Peter Pan and I were one and the same. Just a couple of boys afraid to grow up and grow old. It just took Robin Williams playing the role to help me realize that growing up is a great and glorious thing, but to carry that childlike wonder and love for others...Now, that's the way to live.
Barrie once said "To die would be the greatest adventure of all." To all of you, I say the greatest adventure is to live.

Probably my favourite movie of his is What Dreams May Come (but I'm just a soppy romantic). Right now I'm picturing him in that field of oil painting flowers.

There are three scenes in "What Dreams May Come" that ALWAYS make me cry - and ALL of them have Robin at the center of them. All of them 'Real Time' and not flashback: daughter, son, wife. (Phrased that way to avoid spoilers to anyone reading this other than Timekeeper9, who I'm sure had those scenes immediately pop into their head.)
He was an amazing actor. And so tortured. I hope he finally has the peace he so craved.

I too yam a Popeye fan ... I got that movie on DVD and have enjoyed it many a day when I needed a good laugh. Mr. Williams will be so badly missed.

I'll admit, for me, Jumanji was big. His acting almost personified the "man with the heart of a child" feeling, a boy yanked from his home and tossed in a strange world.
I loved that movie;

I consider Robin Williams as Popeye, among other great ones like Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, John Goodman as Pops Racer, Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart, French Stewart as Inspector Gadget and Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso as The Three Stooges, as one of the best casting choices ever, even if the film wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be.

Fun fact: the role was originally meant for Dustin Hoffman. It got as far as early makeup tests and song-and-dance training before he had a blow-up with the filmmakers. When Williams took over, he did as much improv as he could to capture the feel of the Fleischer cartoons (and expressed frustration that the claustrophobic set designs didn't allow the cast to go as big and wild as he would have liked).
I think the filmmakers lucked out when they got Williams to take over. He was the heart and soul of that movie, and I don't think Hoffman would have captured the cartoony qualities of the character half as well.

On the other hand, Hoffman did manage to capture that in Dick Tracy. But I think he only took that role on a dare.
