Actually the first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released on November 11th, 1991 (which, strangely enough, was released in the USA BEFORE it's Japan release), though Sonic's first public appearance was on bilboards at a concert of the Japanese band "Dreams Come True", one of them members of which was the composer for both Sonic 1 and 2. I'm not sure why this was submitted when it was, but probably because the thought occured to the artist that Sonic would be 14 that year at time of submission.
