Oops!
New to recieving critiques!
I didn't unterstand what the fair/unfair thing was for.

Why does it not just say 'accept' 'decline' ? Haha

Thank you so much!
I didn't know whether to rate this as a fair or unfair critique because of amount of positivity. Hang on you'll see where I'm coming from in a minute.

What I mean is I don't want to say fair with your highly praised critique so I don't seem egoistic and to agree with everything you've said if you know what I mean? Haha!

yeah i know but i've taken Graphic Design and we had to learn some rather interesting stuff when it came to advertising and photography. you did it so well that i'd almost say you're a teacher of that kind of stuff (I'm biased over the fact that I'm a photographer)

I really like your action shots. more than anything else. Photographers have just starting shooting freeze frame shots that is really cool to look at. One did a bullet going through an apple. you can see the shockwave from the bullet and the apple pieces just starting to separate.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-04 19:11:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah high-speed.
I have no idea how fast the shutter is on the bullet. All I know is the only hope I have of getting anything anywhere near that is on a very bright sunny day to get my max 1/8000th shutter lol!

LOL nice! What will be your next action shot?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-05 01:39:43 +0000 UTC]

Possibly tomorrow (saturday) or sunday. Depends what sort of 'action' you're wanting to see lol. It'll be concert shots tomorrow (if any turn out different, or at least decent to what I've already got lol!)

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 02:12:23 +0000 UTC]

Action, LOL...to funny hey since I got you for a second, lol. I have a question? What make is your camera? (Nikon, Sony...) And what type of shutter speed do you need when you freeze a shot? Its not that hard to adjust a digital camera right?

Have a great week!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 02:23:20 +0000 UTC]

Well all my camera details are on the right hand side at the bottom on most(if not all) of my photos!
Depends. If there's a lot of light, then it depends how fast the motion is that you want to capture. If it's fast moving water, then you're looking about 1/2000th and faster to get droplets nice and crisp! If it's a person(musician) you can probably get away with 1/100th > 1/250th!
If it's dark and not much light, you can get away with using flash to freeze it, even with a much slower shutter of say 1/50th

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 03:15:14 +0000 UTC]

Holy hell ok ok...LOL... thats a lot! What if I shot everything at a 1/2000th would I still get that crisp shot for everything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 03:18:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, it wouldn't get a bullet, so not everything perhaps
It should be fine with the majority of things, though you may not always be able to get a fast shutter like that if there's not much light!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 03:20:28 +0000 UTC]

OKOK, so typically there is one way to shoot in the dark, and another for light. So if you stick with this concept, then everything is peachy...right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 03:26:07 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah, in the dark it's much harder to capture a motion shot than in the light, the shutter needs to be open much longer to let the right amount of light in, that is unless you have a crazy capable lens or have your ISO turned up to the max 3200 which then you'll have noise to combat with lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 03:40:46 +0000 UTC]

WOW! but if the shutter speed needs to stay open for a while then you must have a steady hand or that image will be blurry right? -Or- is that why theres a flash for the dark. Here I thought this is a simple art form, lol, ok I bent over take a swing... really ... I deserve it,lol.

How do you know so much... or 19... you must of had a ton of photo classes right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 03:49:00 +0000 UTC]

There is that, but normally you'd use a tripod for long exposures.
[link] that was a long one, you wouldn't think so as there's not motion, but it was all tripod, lights off with just a little bit of light coming in from the hall (causing the reflections on the glass).

If you can, I'd say a carefully positioned white light will work better than a flash for accurate results anyway, even if it's just a small flashlight!

It's like the people that point and shoot, they see all these amazing photos and go and try it for themselves and can't figure out why they can't recreate something in the same style, the camera's only guessing what settings to use, it doesn't know what the person has in mind haha.

Well, the classes I have had I was asleep through most of them.
I started teaching myself before I got to college, so most of the time they were going from the very beginning which I already knew. It kind of killed my passion a little, being stuck there, knowing what the rest of the class was learning. But by any means, I still have a LOT left to learn, but my college class never got that far!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 03:57:12 +0000 UTC]

LOL, you totally nailed that. College can be a bummer. You have to fall in to what the professor wants you to do, and not get to pitch you two cents in. I have to be honest... I fell asleep a few times myself, there was a time when I literally passed out snoring ))))LOUD(((( in a small lecture of 20 students. It was so boring my friend socked me in the shoulder. I woke up going, "What, Shit, who, Damn it!" As I got a HOLD OF MYSELF, the teach says "rough night?" 1 hour of sleep, I didnt have the heart to say her lecture sucked and my leg fell asleep.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 04:03:19 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't so much the lecturer though. The rest of the class knew as much as a plank of wood did at the time lol, so the lecturer had to start from the start for them. Some are still at that place. Didn't care about it so didn't pay attention. It wasn't a compulsary unit to pass the course. I'm on an overall Media based course so there are going to be bits and pieces you're interested in and others not so much.

It didn't help that we had about 6 different lecturers throughout one year. They kept coming and going, so each time we had a new one, we had to start all over again as the lecturers didn't know what we knew and what we didn't. Yuck!

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 04:11:22 +0000 UTC]

Wow as an educator myself, and if I was in that position. The first lecture would be Q and A's. Id want to know where everyone was at, sending the experienced out on in the field projects, while the slow students stayed with me and get caught up on the basics. But you know thats just me,lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 04:14:29 +0000 UTC]

When we got sent out to 'practice' everyone would just piss about though.
I left all my coursework 'til the last minute and just shot it all on uninteresting things, but that still be used as examples of aperture, shutter, and focal length.

In explanations our final tutor asked us to then combine them and provide results also. I didn't do that part and still got the highest marks possible! :S Lol, go figure that one!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 04:19:36 +0000 UTC]

I know that will happen, lol. With the majority of the students gone, it would leave me to grade papers, type out more lesson plans, etc. If I was single, no life... I would make everything due every friday, and pop quizes followed, lol.

C'mon... theres a hook and reason why things are done, lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 04:27:52 +0000 UTC]

When I say last minute, last minute of the deadline. But to be quite honest our lecturer did come across as single with no life lol. He seemed too knowlegable to be having much of a life, almost as if every spare second he got his head was stuck in a book or a newspaper lol. He was quite arrogant though. He knew he knew a lot. We had many taboo subjects we weren't allowed to discuss too because he found it offensive. :S

My friend was no longer allowed to use the term 'gay' in his class to mean something 'stupid' or anything as he found it to be an offensive expression.
I mean understable, kind of. But the girl who used it alot, is gay herself. So go figure lol!
That was just one example.

DustinRigg In reply to JaymeeLS [2011-03-08 04:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Well.. I fought and fought to show the wrong in what people did. In the end, you cant change a person and I accept this. all the taboo subject brought up would be a nice debate that would lead into a project based shpeal. I would have loved the gay talk to happen! I would have led a disscussion on the students thoughts and had a abstract project taking a shot to them thought was "gay" and then explain the piece in class, lol.

"Thats my down fall...curious like a cat."

JaymeeLS In reply to DustinRigg [2011-03-08 04:45:03 +0000 UTC]

I know you can't, well shouldn't even try to change a person. The class started wondering if he was in the closet or something, mainly because of his outburst about what expressions can be used in his class, being significantly touchy about the subject, and how he came across in terms of seeming single with no life and knowlegable, leading to that if he is in the closet, he'd probably be avoiding the dating scene and bury his head in something else. Who knows though! Just speculation! He's left now haha, just like the rest of our lecturers do!

Yeah the debate the class was all for. I think he was one to not accept other peoples views and quickly shunted the conversation with 'that's enough of that'.
I think it's fair to say he was the lecturer we got on with the least lol!

As for what I was saying about the last minute coursework and with the questions you've asked me about shutter/light, I've got my photo examples hosted on tinypic if a visual would help to understand more?

Aperture/F.Stop primary use is depth of field, but also for light too.
[link]
There you can see in the top photo the fence in the background is blurry(lower f.stop number, larger aperture), where the bottom one isn't(higher f.stop number, smaller aperture)

Exposure(light/shutter)
[link]
Top photo is a faster shutter (letting in the least light)
Bottom is a slower shutter (letting in the most light)
Same applies to the rest in order!

Shutter(motion capture)
[link]
Top faster shutter, freezes the motion
bottom slower shutter, blurs the motion (with water, an extremely long exposure can create surreal misty effects)
